- with focus on research
Modern cancer treatment is based to an extremely high degree on multidisciplinary assessment and treatment. The role of the surgeon has become very important, and there are of course great demands on broad knowledge of the cancer diseases even in surgeons, so that the optimal scope and right time for surgical treatment can be chosen, in consultation with other involved specialties. Surgeons must therefore have knowledge of other treatment modalities and also of what precision medicine and other treatments based on tumor biology and genetics can contribute. As a professor of surgical oncology we see that you lead the surgical development in a network with other actors in cancer treatment. Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Center provides optimal conditions for conducting internationally leading care, research and development in this area.
Treatment of cancer patients today rests on several pillars. These have been introduced in cancer therapy in different eras, and all are still highly relevant, individually or in different combinations, in the mission to be able to defeat cancer. First of all treatments was surgery, in which the tumor, and sometimes its metastases, are removed, taking into account that the side effects of the surgery must not entail significant risks or reductions in quality of life. The technical development in surgery has led to an increasingly sophisticated approach, where, for example, minimally invasive methods have been able to reduce surgical trauma, with faster rehabilitation and reduced pain, etc. as a result. Modern anesthesia and intensive care have also led to that patients with other diseases or old age may be eligible for advanced surgery: the boundaries today look completely different than just 20 years ago.
Other treatment modalities during the 20th century have clearly become other pillars on which cancer treatments rest: radiation therapy (external, targeted precision radiation, proton radiation, etc.), chemotherapy, immunotherapy and in recent decades precision medicine, made possible by the exponentially increasing knowledge of tumor biology and tumor genetics. We are now seeing an increasing opportunity to use all of these different treatment modalities in different combinations; for example, today some tumors that were previously considered inoperable can be treated with neoadjuvant therapy including various modalities in a way that then allows radical surgery. The development of modern cancer therapy has not, as many predicted, meant a diminishing role for surgery; rather, the need for surgery for many tumor forms is increasing!
We are now announcing a Combined employment in Surgical Oncology. The call is not aimed at a specific subspecialty but must be within some surgical specialty where cancer or tumor diagnoses in adult individuals are investigated and treated.
