Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Huddinge

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medicine Huddinge (MedH), Karolinska Institutet (KI), is one of KI’s leading clinical departments. Its research is conducted within six units and three research centers and encompasses around 70 different research groups. The ambition of MedH is to be a leading international department within medical research and education.

The Endocrinology Unit at MedH conducts world-leading research in the field of lipid biology with a focus on white adipose tissue and lipid dysregulation. The unit is located in close connection with the medical unit (MU) Endocrinology at the Karolinska University Hospital (K), with a very large in- and outpatient activity within Endocrinology. A major part of the clinical activity is diabetology, and a large number of patients with all forms of diabetes are cared for at MU Endocrinology each year. The outpatient activity for type 1 and 2 diabetes is one of the largest in Sweden, with its own diagnostic platform for monogenic diabetes as well as a major platform for diabetic ulcers performing investigations of peripheral circulation. A fully equipped clinical research center is closely associated to the outpatient clinic. Altogether, we offer and internationally leading clinical research environment with large possibilities for synergy effects.

Description of the subject area

Clinical diabetology is a broad subject encompassing different diabetes forms within many research areas. MedH’s endocrinology unit at KI, in collaboration with MU Endocrinology at K, has identified diabetes complications as a strategic research field for its future translational activity. To strengthen this area, we now look for a person to employ as professor, to develop and lift this research field to the highest international level.

To this task, we look for a person conducting high quality clinical research within diabetology with a focus on cardiometabolic complications, diabetes-associated mortality and improved quality of life for patients with diabetes. The candidate’s research should be internationally competitive and strongly anchored in a parallel clinical activity. We particularly look for a translational research profile containing experimental, clinical and epidemiological methods, for optimal synergies with ongoing preclinical and clinical research at KI/K.

Your mission

We are looking for an experienced and internationally recognized research leader who can lead an independent research group within the aforementioned area. Besides own research, the professor is expected to play an active role in the cardiometabolic research that is already conducted at MedH and at Campus Flemingsberg and to interact with other research groups. Fully equipped wet labs exist at Campus Flemingsberg in close connection to the hospital premises. The professor position shall be combined with a clinical employment as specialist physician at MU Endocrinology, Karolinska University Hospital, and the clinical employment is expected to be 30%. Clinical activity will contain both in- and outpatient work. The department will offer the new professor a recruitment package over several years to allow a rapid and efficient establishment.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent scientific expertise, good pedagogical expertise and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The position will be combined with a position as specialist trained physician within endocrinology at MU Endocrinology, Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge. The candidate must therefore have an MD with specialist competence in endocrinology, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

Because this recruitment is part of MedH’s strategic plan to strengthen the translational research within the metabolism field, it is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown:

  • An internationally recognized translational research profile in the area of diabetes complications.
  • Documented clinical activity as a specialist physician in endocrinology with special competence in treatment of diabetes and diabetes complications.
  • Broad collaborative experience with colleagues from other research areas and disciplines.
  • Very good ability to attract external research funding.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
