The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: cardiovascular medicine, allergy, and inflammatory diseases. The Division of Cardiology, at the Department of Medicine Solna conducts clinical, epidemiological and experimental research as well as education close to the clinical Department of Cardiology, Theme Heart, Vascular and Neuro, at Karolinska University Hospital.

Description of the subject area

A position as lecturer in cardiology with focus on heart failure combined with an employment as specialist at the Department of Cardiology, Karolinska University Hospital.

Your mission

We are looking for an associate professor with strong epidemiological and clinical research activities in cardiovascular diseases, and more specifically in heart failure. The focus of the advertised position is to conduct registry-based, epidemiological and clinical research using Swedish and European data sources in the field of heart failure.

The position includes teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as supervision of doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. The position is combined with 30 percent clinical work as a cardiology specialist physician at the Karolinska University Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise; and clinical expertise (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The ideal applicant is expected to:

1) be an independent researcher with focus on registry-based, clinical epidemiological research in heart failure;

2) have documented knowledge in the methodology needed for performing registry-based, epidemiological studies;

3) have a leading position within international scientific societies focusing on heart failure;

4) have documented experience from teaching and supervision of educational activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Applicants must further possess all the formal merits required for a clinical position as specialist in cardiology at the Karolinska University Hospital.

The position will be combined with a 30 percent position as a specialist trained physician in cardiovascular diseases at the Department of Cardiology at the Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in cardiovascular diseases, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience in the field of registry-based research infrastructure and methodology since the position aims to strengthen registry-based research. This will be documented by the quality and number of publications in international peer reviewed journals during the last five years.

  • International collaborations and academic positions of trust since Karolinska Institutet is involved in the international research community. This will be documented by the engagement in international scientific organizations with focus on heart failure.

  • Experience from arranging and leading lectures, seminars and bedside education within cardiology both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Since the applicant will work in the Heart failure Section of the Department of Cardiology, advanced training in heart failure represents a merit.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
