Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology

- with focus on education and research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa) conducts education and research in physiology, pharmacology, anaesthesiology and intensive care at a high international level. The department has 400 employees, 30 research groups and 90 doctoral students. We offer a dynamic teaching environment in newly renovated premises and a creative research environment in the newly built Biomedicum at Campus Solna. The research activities at the Department include the subject areas of cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, renal physiology, anaesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research in our subjects. More information about our research can be found here.

Description of the subject area

The subject of neurophysiology includes teaching and research in the physiology of the nervous system. In molecular neurophysiology, physiological techniques are used, for example electrophysiological recordings with voltage clamp and patch clamp, as well as optogenetics, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology to understand physiological and pathophysiological processes that are important for the development of disease in the central nervous system.

Your mission

The Department has a very large responsibility for teaching physiology in many of KI's undergraduate programs, such as the medical, dentist, physiotherapist and optician program. The holder is also expected to have a leading role in undergraduate and advanced level teaching within neurophysiology as well as administrative academical duties within this area. The holder shall take responsibility for the management of his / her research group and conduct research at the highest national level and is also expected to conduct postgraduate education, research and administrative academic work in the subject area. The holder is expected to have a leading role in the form of development, course and moment responsibilities within the new Master's program in Translational Physiology and Pharmacology, which is led by the Department.
