Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The research group ‘Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery’ is located in the heart of KI’s main campus area in Solna. The group contains researchers, biostatisticians, administrator, PhD candidates and students. We have a clinical background in upper gastrointestinal surgery and conduct research of diseases and surgery of the oesophagus and stomach with a focus on cancer. You can read more about the group here: http://ki.se/en/mmk/upper-gi-surgery

Description of the subject area

The Research Specialist will examine aetiology, prevention and treatment of cancer of the oesophagus and stomach (upper gastrointestinal cancer) and associated conditions (e.g. Barrett’s oesophagus, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, obesity). The research is mainly based on Swedish or Nordic cohorts of patients with gastro-oesofageal reflux (including those who undergo antireflux surgery), obesity (not the least those who undergo bariatric surgery), and upper gastrointestinal cancer (particularly those who have undergone surgical treatment).

The work is led by Jesper Lagergren, the research group leader. He is professor and consultant surgeon at KI and Karolinska University Hospital and member of the Nobel Assembly. You can read more about him here: https://staff.ki.se/people/jeslag

Your mission

The work tasks mainly consist of research, including detailed planning of studies (study protocols), ethical applications, data management, statistical analyses and writing of scientific papers. Another important task is to write grant applications. Supervision of PhD students and other students may be included. Some level of teaching is expected, e.g. in connection with the research group’s PhD courses, research seminars, ”Journal Clubs” and ”Methods Clubs”.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending the doctoral thesis.

We are looking for a skilled younger researcher with knowledge in clinical epidemiology and ideally experience in research of causes, prevention and treatment of upper gastrointestinal cancer and associated conditions. A medical exam and clinical knowledge in upper gastrointestinal surgery are meriting.

Assessment criteria

Applicants will mainly be evaluated based on their scientific qualifications and appropriate experience and skills in the work tasks described above (under ‘Entry requirements’). Documented skills in clinical epidemiological research methodology and study design are particularly qualifying. The applicant should have good experience in analysing and interpreting research data and in writing excellent scientific articles in English. Documented knowledge and interest in oesophageal and gastric cancer and associated conditions are strongly meriting. Important personal characteristics include curiosity, engagement, social competence and collaboration skills. Excellent knowledge in the English language (both orally and in writing) are required, not the least because English is the official language of the group.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, KI will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
