Karolinska Institutet,

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to front-line medical research?

Do you want to work with cancer research with a focus on translational cancer research at Karolinska Institutet? Are you interested in experimental and translational research? Do you want to actively contribute to better cancer treatment and diagnostics? Welcome to become part of an exciting research environment where pre-clinical and clinical researchers meet.

The Oncology-Pathology Department consists of more than 30 research groups localized at the Bioclinicum facility, Science for Life Laboratories (Sci-LifeLab) and Karolinska University Hospital, Solna. These groups represent know-how in innovative technologies as well as in pre-clinical and clinical research with the joint ambition to make a difference for the lives of cancer patients.

Description of the subject area

Increased knowledge of tumor development at the molecular level is crucial for our understanding of the disease, its course and how it can be treated. Molecular tumor biology with a focus on precision medicine is part of the strategic plan for the future development of the research at the Department of Oncology-Pathology, KI. The intention is that the department's research in this area will contribute to and enable translational cancer research medicine in the field of cancer, i.e. how to develop better treatments and limit side effects.

The focus of the applicants activities should relate to basic tumor research based on clinically relevant issues and have a clear focus on patient benefit. This may include basic molecular studies of tumor transformation, how protein structures affect tumors' response to cancer treatment, and an understanding of how resistance mechanisms develop and change during disease progression. Identification of tumor markers that can lead to improved diagnostics and prognostication and thus enable better treatments are other important areas. Similarly, the development of new cancer drugs or new uses for known cancer drugs based on own discoveries.

It is a merit that the applicant has demonstrated

  • A clear plan for the future development of translational cancer research regarding applicants' own area of expertise
  • Successful supervision of doctoral students and students in pre-clinical experimental environment
  • Experience of successful research in networks with different disciplines.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
