Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Neuroscience

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Applications are welcomed to a position as Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Division of Neuro, Karolinska Institutet. The position has a focus on pain.

At the Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS), we research and teach about brain function - from the molecular level to the societal level. We are organized into five departments and teach prospective speech therapists, occupational therapists, doctors, opticians, orthoptists, psychologists, and physiotherapists. The clinical research and education is done in collaboration with the Stockholm Region and with other research groups at Karolinska Institutet. Please visit the department's website for more information: ki.se/cns

The Division of Neuro currently has one professorship in pain research, with a clear focus on clinical research and neuroimmunology. It is now important to strengthen the competence in cognitive neuroscience, to create a more complete picture of how cognitive processes, such as learning and executive functions, affect, and are affected by pain, and thus consolidate the division’s international leading position in translational pain research.

Description of the subject area

The Division of Neuro has been conducting broad and successful research in neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease for many years, as well as the basis for long-term pain. The division's researchers have made a strong contribution to the rapid development made in recent years in the understanding of long-term pain and have been successful in attracting long-term research funding. Among other things, this has led to advances in the understanding of pain in people with fibromyalgia, back pain and rheumatic conditions, and has led to knowledge of the mechanisms associated with various forms of treatment for pain.

Your mission

The successful candidate will mainly work with research and education within cognitive neuroscience, with a main focus on pain. The work will include the candidate’s own development and application of experimental pain studies in humans, using both brain imaging and pain testing. The position has its focus on research, and the candidate is expected to conduct research at an internationally high level and lead a strong research group in the field. The work also includes that the candidate contributes to teaching in graduate and undergraduate education.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

To be eligible for the position, the candidate must have documented experience of conducting international competitive research in the field of cognitive neuroscience, with a focus on pain and mechanisms in long-term pain conditions, and must also have received research grants in competition in this research area. We are looking for a candidate with an expertise in using brain imaging and pain testing in experimental studies of the brain’s structure and function, the healthy pain system and pain in different long-term pain conditions, and with experience in evaluating treatment mechanisms and joint processes with psychiatric conditions. The applicant must have very good knowledge of speaking and writing in English.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious if the applicant has developed and applied experimental pain studies on humans, involving both brain imaging and pain testing, in healthy individuals as well as in patients with different pain conditions. It is also an advantage to have shown collaboration with clinicians, as well as to have a well-established national and international involvement in the field. Education in, and experience from, academic leadership is also an advantage.

Good pedagogical experience from various forms of teaching at undergraduate, advanced level and postgraduate level as well as experience of individual supervision of degree projects, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows is an advantage.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
