Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

A position as a Research Specialist is available in the lab of Kenneth R Chien at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at Karolinska Institutet. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced physician-scientist with a strong background in developmental and regenerative cardiovascular biology and medicine. The lab is located in Biomedicum in Solna.

Description of the subject area

The lab’s primary focus is to understand heart development at the molecular and cellular basis using in vitro and in vivo model systems, with the ultimate goals of applying the developmental principles, logic, pathways, and the state-of-the-art biotechnologies to innovating novel therapeutics for congenital and acquired heart disease in humans. We are unraveling an extremely complicated process of mammalian cardiogenesis using various animal model systems and human samples at the single-cell level through omics approaches.

Your mission

The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting human cardiogenesis and vasculogenesis research projects using various animal model systems, omics data analyses, and modified mRNA. The candidate will perform original research in developmental and regenerative cardiovascular biology and medicine, especially focusing on cardiac outflow tract development, human congenital heart disease such as Tetralogy of Fallot and conotruncal defects, and novel growth factors’ therapeutic effects for cardiomyogenesis and vasculogenesis. Other tasks include: writing reports and scientific articles, applying for further research funds, assisting the group leader, participation in joint meetings and seminars, teaching activities including giving lectures and supervising graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and setting up important domestic and international collaborations. Working language is English.

Eligibility requirements

The applicant must hold both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees with broad clinical and basic research experiences in cardiovascular medicine and biology (over 10 years, respectively is desirable). Previous employment as Assistant professor or equivalent is meriting. Broad knowledges and experiences in the fields of developmental and molecular cardiology, stem cell biology, and regenerative medicine are mandatory and include: mouse works including embryo handling, genetically modified mice generation and cardiovascular surgeries, molecular cloning with CRISPR-Cas9, ES cell culture and in vitro differentiation, histology and cytology with advanced imaging skills, etc. Expertise in performing and analysing results from cell sorting with FACS is required. Expertise in handling of huge omics data derived from e.g., single-cell RNA-seq and chromatin sequencing is also needed. Therefore, deep familiarity with bioinformatics and omics data analysis is necessary.

The applicant is expected to have written more than 10 articles as a first and/or corresponding author in high-quality scientific journals in the fields of clinical cardiology, developmental and molecular cardiology, or stem cell biology/regenerative medicine. Documented and excellent communication and writing skills in English are required. Ability to work in teams is essential and the candidate’s personal skills will be highly valued.

Assessment criteria

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
