In the multidisciplinary Campus Flemingsberg, one of the world's leading medical universities - Karolinska Institutet (KI) - collaborates with award-winning highly specialized Karolinska University Hospital and KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology. With innovation and research in the field of Medical Imaging Processing (MIP) and with the patient at the center, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) will now be accelerated. Within the region, the resources of universities, healthcare and companies are pooled.

The core facilities Stockholm Medical Image Laboratory and Education (SMILE) from KI Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC) and BioImage Informatics from SciLifeLab offer guidance and support to Swedish researchers in the field.

SMILE and Swedish National Infrastructure of Computing (SNIC) invest in high-performance computing capabilities. As part of this collaboration, SMILE recruits an Application Expert (AE) in MIP & AI, with both local, regional and national responsibilities.

Your mission

Locally, as AE in MIP & AI, you will

  • improve processes for use of the hospitals medical images to empower research, clinical validation/implementation and education e.g. by encrypting and transferring of image data
  • develop the SMILE facility to improve the use of SNICs resources and education within the areas
  • Contribute to the development and interpretation of guidelines incl. regulations for deidentification of medical images

At the national level you will as AE in MIP & AI

  • deliver advanced user support
  • contribute to development & education within the area
  • collaborate with researchers to understand requirements and deliver solutions
  • support research, design, and implementation of Deep Learning algorithms
  • guide researchers towards local and national SNIC resources

The employment can be part-time if desired, up to 100% until end of 2022.

Your profile

You are a PhD researcher in e.g. computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering or applied mathematics, with expertise in medical image analysis and machine learning. Alternatively, you have a master's degree in a relevant technical / scientific field with at least three years' application experience. You are included in publications from relevant journals and conferences. You are an energizing team player who likes to support others and has very good communication skills in English in writing and speaking; is used to working independently, takes own initiatives, is proactive, inquisitive, anticipates problems and seeks solutions.

We demand documented strong scientific foundations in either Scientific Computing, Signal Processing, or Statistical Learning with experience of practical research in medical image analysis, computer vision, and image comprehension. This includes a strong background in Deep Learning and documented familiarity with open-source frameworks for medical image analysis and Mechine learning, like Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch, ITK, VTK, Slicer, and scikit-learning as well as experience of Nvidia GPU servers, DeepOps and GPU programming. Knowledge of regulations regarding integrity, clinical medical research, its terminology and quality measures is also an advantage.
