The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) is one of Karolinska Institutet's (KI) largest departments. One of the department's five section’s is the Center for Psychiatric Research (CPF). At CPF, interdisciplinary and multi-professional research, including undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education related to psychiatry and mental illness are conducted. Examples of current research are studies focusing on different diagnostic categories (e.g., psychosis, obsessive compulsive disorders and addiction), epidemiological research on all aspects of mental illness and developmental disorders, as well as clinical treatment research in collaboration with the Region Stockholm. Description of the subject area

The subject area is clinical adult psychiatry with a broad focus within general psychiatry with the possibility of a more specific focus when it comes to the research area in psychiatry.

Clinical psychiatric research and teaching within Karolinska institutet (KI) and the Region Stockholm has since 2007 been organized within the framework of the joint organizational structure of Centre for Psychiatry Research (CPF). Within KI/CPF all educations are conducted in the areas of adult psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, addiction and child and adolescent psychiatry.

Your mission

The position entails extensive educational responsibility in general psychiatry within the undergraduate education, in the medical program and to some extent within the physiotherapist program at KI. The psychiatry teaching in the medical program at KI is given within the course titled “ Klinisk medicin – inriktning neuro, sinnen, psyke (NSP)”. The general psychiatry and the addiction components of the course are conducted at four different clinical sites (four times a year, with about 25-30 students per occasion) and you will be responsible for the general psychiatry component at one of three psychiatric sites.

The position includes management of the general psychiatry component of the course at the Solna and the duties will be carried out in collaboration with the administrator and other M.D.’s with teaching roles, within KI and SLSO Psykiatri. The holder of the position is expected to lead and drive the pedagogical development of the psychiatry/ addiction component, the NSP-course and the medical program. The work responsibilities include planning, management and teaching within this specified education as well as collaboration within the KI medical program. An important part of the role is to participate in and develop psychiatric teaching. A new six-year medical program is being implemented where the department CNS wants a prominent role.

Other possible management assignments within the framework of the position, for the right person, can include: being a research group leader within the CNS, member in the R&D (FoU) group within the CPF and other assignments within the department and within the medical program. The education and research conducted by the candidate should be integrated with clinical work within one of Region Stockholm's psychiatric clinics. The holder of this position is expected to conduct active research in psychiatry at an international level and to supervise doctoral students.

We are looking for M.D.s, with specialist competence in adult psychiatry. The employment form will be a combination of clinical work and teaching, where clinical activities accounting for usually a 30% activity level. If the appointee fulfills SLSO’s requirements for employment as assistant chief physician or chief physician, the appointee can be offered this position.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise; good scientific expertise; management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in psychiatry within Stockholms läns sjukvårdsområde (SLSO) and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Psychiatry, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Persons applying must have active research in clinical psychiatry or translational research with a clinical application.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1) and clinical expertise (1).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.2 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience of various teaching methods in education at basic and advanced level, pedagogical developmental work and responsibility for running courses and course moments.

  • Experience of individual supervision of degree projects at undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as of doctoral students and postdocs.

  • Original scientific work and their quality and quantity with special regard to postgraduate works.

  • Own research grants received in competition with the applicant being the main applicant.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Pedagogical development work that has resulted in improved education.

  • Experience of establishing, implementing and/or evaluating national or international treatment or care programs.

  • Presentations and scientific work at national and international conferences.

  • Reviews and evaluations of others' scientific work.

  • Development of an own research profile within their subject area and has several first and/or last authorships that show development within their subject area

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI. Emphasis will also be placed on personal suitability.
