The activities at the Division of Clinical science, Intervention and Technology, CLINTEC, form the basis for the interface with academic healthcare. We are now searching a professor who can develop the knowledge and practice in that direction within the area of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). The division for SLP is one of 14 divisions at CLINTEC with the main task to conduct education and research with high quality in SLP. The area includes difficulties with language, voice or speaking leading to problems with communicating, and swallowing disorders. The division conducts basic training for SLP’s with responsibility for the SLP programme, further education at the advanced level that can be used in a master's degree in speech therapy and postgraduate education. The research and postgraduate education are conducted in research groups with a focus in the field of SLP.

Description of the subject area

Speech - Language Pathology describes and explains various difficulties with human communication and with swallowing, and what consequences it can have for human health and quality of life. Speech-Language Pathologists are authorized to work with both communication and swallowing disorders. The field is based on an academic multidisciplinary discipline that is responsible for expanding the knowledge base about the nature of the disorders, the precision of the diagnosis and the effectiveness of the clinical treatments.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on education and research. We are searching for a person with strong commitment and high scientific competence in the main field of SLP. The tasks include education, postgraduate education and research with a focus on increasing quality and quantity in the field of SLP. The position includes teaching and responsibilities in the SLP programme for quality development and quality assurance of education that corresponds to high demands from the university. This includes continuous development in terms of conditions for learning, pedagogy and efficiency, as well as a strengthened research connection to education, including practice-integrated learning. It is a priority to actively stimulate the teachers’ research and the evidence-base in the clinical practice.

As a professor, you have an academic leadership in relevant areas of SLP with national and international collaboration in both education and research. You are expected to initiate, maintain and develop active research collaborations, apply for grants, lead research projects and supervise doctoral students. Your activities must be combined with clinical activities where you work for the establishment of evidence-based methods for assessment and treatment through the implementation of your own research or research based on national or international findings.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet). The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or have otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge.

In addition to formal pedagogical competence, you must also have experience of pedagogical development and extensive experience of teaching in speech therapy and supervision of doctoral students. You must be an established researcher in the subject area and have your own line of research.

The position will be combined with clinical service as a licensed SLP at the relevant healthcare unit and therefore the applicant must hold a degree in speech therapy and meet the requirements for license in Sweden. Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS), besides English.

Assessment criteria 

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2), and clinical expertise (2).

  • Excellence in planning, conducting and leading research and communicating research with the surrounding society.
  • Excellence in planning, implementing, leading and evaluating teaching with both breadth and depth as well as a reflective approach to teaching and learning.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience of management and development assignments as well as formal leadership training.
  • Documented experience of pedagogical management assignments.
  • Experience of pedagogical development work or research.
  • Experience of cooperation with related disciplines, nationally and internationally.
  • Experience of teaching and supervision at undergraduate, advanced level and postgraduate level.
  • Experience of collaborating with the surrounding society, including professional SLPs and collaborating professions.
  • Having obtained research funding in competition.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
