Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neuroscience

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Neuroscience has the mission to conduct groundbreaking research on the nervous system. Our 35 research groups study the function of the nervous system in health and disease, at the molecular, cellular, and network level. We now intend to strengthen our research profile on neuronal networks, with a focus on research in animal models of cognitive mechanisms, thereby providing a necessary complement to clinical research on cognitive function currently carried out at Karolinska Institutet. We are located in the new Biomedicum building, which hosts a multidisciplinary environment with five basic science departments and top-level core facilities.

Description of the subject area
The neurons and neuronal networks involved in cognition can be studied in experimental animals using circuit tracing, cellular resolution large-scale recording, imaging and manipulation of neuronal activity, combined with advanced behavioral analyses. The subject of this professorship includes development and application of state-of-the-art methods in behaving animals to identify and describe cellular and circuit mechanisms of cognition with relevance to health and mental disease.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The successful applicant will pursue internationally leading research on neuronal networks in model animals, including the development of tools and principles to investigate and analyze the organization of circuits, and the function of neurons in health and disease. The professor is expected to act as principal investigator with delegated responsibility for grants, staff, work environment and other administrative duties at the department. The position also involves education at basic, advanced, and doctoral levels, as well as administrative academic duties. Collaboration with other groups at the department, at KI and internationally, as well as outreach to the general society, are expected.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated excellent scientific merits and good teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

For this employment the following eligibility requirements must be fulfilled:

  • Good experience in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as a supervisor, teacher, and course organizer.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown excellence in research on neuronal networks through the development and application of state-of-the-art methodologies to trace, record, analyze and manipulate neuronal activity in animals with scientific discoveries pertaining to cognition and cognitive dysfunction and publications in top scientific journals with the applicant as senior author.

It is meritorious that the applicant has documented track-record of funding from highly competitive national and international grants and is expected to pursue research at such a level that significant funding can be ensured in the future, sufficient to support the activities.

It is also meritorious that the applicant has experience of conducting and developing education at advanced and doctoral levels.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
