Since June 2020, the Department of Medicine has been participating in a research project in collaboration with Uppsala University, which aims to identify substances with anti-inflammatory effects. The substances are isolated from plants used in traditional Chinese medicine. The project is funded through a collaboration with Guangdong Provincial Hospital for Chinese Medicine. The position is linked to Professor Per-Johan Jakobsson's research group at the division for rheumatology, Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Solna.

Your mission

This employment as a laboratory technician is a fixed-term employment, with the possibility of extension. Per-Johan Jakobsson's research group consists of about 20 researchers with varying backgrounds and from several countries, and it runs several research projects, of which the current one is one of the larger. While our partners at Uppsala University isolate fractions and substances from plant material that we have received directly from researchers in China, we at KI develop biological cell assays for evaluation of substances isolated from the plant material. These biological cell assays are designed to identify substances with anti-inflammatory effects and are often based on transfected cell lines or cells isolated from blood from blood donors. The effect of the substances is evaluated with different methods, e.g. flow cytometry and ELISA-like assays. Your role is to work with these cell assays.

Your profile

We are looking for one or two committed persons who will work in our research laboratories at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM). The applicant must have previous experience of biomedical research work, have very good communication skills, be well-structured and be able to take responsibility for delivering well-documented and well-presented high-quality research data. The work involves close contacts with project members within and outside the research group, and we are happy to see that you summarize and present your results yourself at meetings with these researchers.

Requirements: Experience from cell culture and experience from molecular biology and immune-based methods. Previous experience in data processing of large amounts of data, including excel and powerpoint. Good oral and written communication in English.

Merit: Previous experience of simple flow cytometry and analyzes with the software FlowJo, basic knowledge in immunology and intracellular signaling.
