Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. Research group and project

At present there are no disease modifying treatments to stop cognitive decline in dementia. The Swedish Registry for Dementia and Cognitive Diseases (SveDem) includes over 95000 patients and over 130000 cognitive follow-ups. As a postdoc in our group, you will create a machine learning algorithm which identifies medications, among those which patients take for other conditions, which are associated with slower cognitive decline over time.

Your mission

The postdoctoral fellow will independently perform data arrangement, curation and data analysis using machine learning algorithms and validate the methods and outcomes with researchers with knowledge in the medical field. Our collaborators at KTH Royal Institute of Technology will supervise the technical aspects of the creation of the machine learning algorithm.

This is a temporary (full-time) position for one year with the possibility of extension.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The candidate should have a strong machine learning background with a high interest to perform interdisciplinary research with medical professionals. Knowledge in medicine or clinical research, epidemiology or biostatistics are desirable, but not mandatory. However the candidate should have the passion to learn the desirable skills for the interdisciplinary project environment

Data management and analysis skills (SPSS and either SAS and/or R and/or Stata and/or Python) are highly desirable. Documented skills in development and application of novel methods would be an advantage.

Excellent English writing skills and the ability and willingness to collaborate in a team are required. Knowledge in Swedish is a merit.

We stress scientific expertise, statistical and collaborative competence when assessing applicants.
