The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2018 of 490 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 75 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.
We are looking for an applicant who is strongly motivated in studying risk factors and biological signature of several clinical geriatric syndromes, among which multimorbidity and frailty.
In this position as assistant professor you will be carrying out independent research at the Aging Research Center (ARC) on several projects that aim to 1) define the phenotypes of multimorbidity and frailty in older adults, and their changes over time; 2) investigate their risk and predisposing factors; 3) identify biomarker changes associated to their occurrence. We are looking for an assistant professor that will be working in the research group of professor Laura Fratiglioni.
The successful candidate is expected also to play a critical role in the application to and leading of national and international grants, doctoral students supervision, teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, and in the expansion of the current research line.
The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer. This is a full-time position.
Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor. Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.
The successful candidate is expected:
1) to hold an MD degree with a specialization and proved clinical experience in geriatric medicine
2) to have a PhD in epidemiology carried out in the field of aging research, no longer than five years ago before the application deadline
3) to have proved experience in carrying out independent research, including having led single studies as well as being responsible of research grants in the field of aging
4) to have excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively and productively with other researchers in the team
5) to have good analytical skills and knowledge of the more advanced statistical methods
6) to have excellent English language skills in terms of oral and written communication.
Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer.
