Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The position is placed at the Department of Oncology-Pathology, Karolinska Institutet, with 50 percent of full-time for research, together with 50 percent of full-time employment as an oncologist at a medical unit within Theme Cancer at the Karolinska University Hospital-Solna.

The successful applicant is expected to contribute academic leadership within oncological research and clinical oncology focusing on oncological treatment. The applicant shall function as a principal investigator (PI) and conduct high quality research within the area, including supervision of PhD-students, post-docs and younger researchers within oncology. The position includes active contributions to basic education within eg the medical program, specialist education and PhD-education in oncology. For the clinical appointment, the applicant is expected to actively participate and lead the development of oncological treatment within the area of expertise.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicants research should be of international high quality, and with clear potential for future development, within oncology focusing on oncological treatment. The subject encompasses preclinical, translational, and clinical studies of solid tumors within oncological treatment of adults concerning for example: Factors that predispose to tumor development; Identification of novel treatment strategies; Understanding of how mechanisms for resistance develop and change during disease progression; Knowledge of how established and new treatments may be optimized and how treatments may be tailored for individual patients; and as far as possible minimize side-effects and maintain good quality of life.

The applicant shall have experience from teaching on the basic and specialist levels in oncology and as a supervisor in doctoral education in oncology.

The applicant shall be a clinically active specialist physician in oncology with extensive knowledge of clinical oncological treatment of solid tumors in adults. The applicant should present a clear vision of how he/she sees the development of oncological treatment within the next five years. The applicant should in his/her clinical practice be well experienced in oncological clinical routine work such as patient facility and hospital ward services, and clinical conferences, and mentoring residents as well as junior specialist doctors.

The position will be combined with a 50 percent position as a specialist trained physician in oncology at a healthcare facility for medical training and research and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in oncology, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

To become employed, the applicant is required to hold a Swedish specialty license in oncology and to have the required knowledge of spoken and written Swedish.

Bases of assessment 

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (1), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1), and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
