As professor in clinical chemistry and coagulation at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery at the Karolinska Institutet you will also work at the Karolinska University Hospital’s section for clinical chemistry at the university laboratories. The hospital excels in coagulation, inflammation, lipid metabolism, bile metabolism, anemia diseases etc.The development of disease, diagnostics and treatment is conducted in close coloration with ground breaking research. Educational responsibilities include basic and advanced teaching for doctors, biomedical analysists, and chemists working within the hospital.

Your mission

The employment is focused on research. The position is strategic for the development of research, education, clinical practice and collaboration within the field. The position also includes responsibility for pre- and post-doctoral education.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant is expected to demonstrate documented successful experience in strategic development within the field of clinical chemistry and coagulation.

The employment will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in clinical chemistry or other adjacent field at the Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in clinical chemistry or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. If the appointee fulfills the Karolinska University Hospital’s requirements for employment as Senior Registrar or Senior Consultant, the appointee can be offered this position.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Bases of assessment 

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3) educational expertise (2), leadership-, development- and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

Documented successful experience of the following is meriting:

  • Management and conducting of clinical trials.
  • Attracting external research funding.
  • Management of a multiprofessional/multidisciplinary research group.
  • Participation in multiprofessional/multidisciplinary research and development networks, preferably both at national and international level.

  • Teaching of health professionals and of undergraduate students in medicine and other subjects related to the field of clinical chemistry and coagulation.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching (or have equivalent competence) in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
