The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups. Strong competence in epidemiological theory and methodology is a prerequisite for the department's research, postgraduate education, and teaching, as well as for IMM's special assignment as a national expert body in the field of environmental medicine.


Description of the subject area
The senior lecturer in epidemiology with a focus on research must, in addition to conducting high-quality epidemiological research primarily concerning the etiology of allergic diseases and hypersensitivity, also have a leading role in environmental health risk assessment and teach epidemiology.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The successful applicant will conduct independent research and participate in the doctoral program with the supervision of doctoral students and to some extent also in the undergraduate program. You will also contribute to the management of IMMs health risk assessment and health risk assessment.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise; management, development and collaborative skills.

We are looking for a person with a strong epidemiological research profile focusing on allergy diseases, with ongoing independent research, experience of researcher-initiated collection of epidemiological primary data, and knowledge and experience from work with population-based epidemiological studies.

Competence in conducting epidemiological studies is a requirement, such as a documented ability to obtain own research grants. Furthermore, we see that the person who will be employed has documented experience of environmental health risk assessment.

Bases of assessment 

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (1), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has demonstrated broad experience from epidemiological studies and has experience of researcher-initiated collection of epidemiological primary data including data on diet, lifestyle and environmental factors.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
