Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anaesthesiology and Intensive care. We have approximately 400 employees and 90 doctoral students working in 30 research groups. The department is located within the brand new Biomedicum Research center on the Solna Campus of Karolinska Institute. Departmental research interests include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, renal physiology, anaesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology, and pain. Our collaborations with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provide unique opportunities for translational research within these subjects. More information about our research can be found here.

Cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and associated renal disease are major health problems, affecting more than 1.5 billion people worldwide. Increasing age as well as non optimal lifestyle causing obesity significantly contribute to the increasing incidence. Further mechanistic understandings will greatly aid in the development of new strategies to prevent or treat adverse complications. This position is aimed at increasing our understanding regarding central cardio-renal mechanisms and mediators of importance for these diseases in order to provide novel clinical interventions for the future.

Your mission

The main tasks consist of research, research education and teaching in physiology. Research must be conducted in areas relevant to understanding of physiological and molecular factors for control of cardiac and renal function affect risk of importance for development of metabolic and renally mediated cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

It is expected that the Professor will take responsibility for the management of her/his research group and perform research at the highest International level. Furthermore, it is expected that the Professor will take responsibility for and a leading role in undergraduate teaching as well as education at the advanced and postgraduate level.
