The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education are conducted in collaboration with other research groups from the Karolinska Institutet, with other universities as well as Region Stockholm.

Ophthalmology is a broad research area from biomedical mechanisms in the eye and brain over surgical interventions of eye disease to visual perception. The purpose of this recruitment is to strengthen the translational aspect of the development in the field with special focus on retinal diseases. The Department of Clinical Neuroscience with its division of Eye and Vision has an extensive and very successful line of research in the field of ophthalmology and optometry. The Division of Eye and Vision has a comprehensive assignment in education and is responsible for the ophthalmology training for medical students, optometry students and several other educations such as ophthalmic nurses and orthoptists. The education is performed both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Department now wishes to maintain its scientific and educational position in the field of retinal diseases through recruiting a new professor.

Your mission

The successful applicant will conduct research and education (both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level) within different programs at the department with focus on retinal disease. The holder shall promote research in the area of ophthalmology through actions in research as well as participating in international cooperation. The candidate is also expected to establish network and collaboration with other groups at the division, department, at KI and internationally, as well as outreach to the general society. The position is thought to be a combined employment with clinical duties at specialist level in ophthalmology. If the appointee fulfills the S:t Erik Eye Hospital’s requirements for employment as Senior Registrar or Senior Consultant, the appointee can be offered this position. The position is planned to be distributed 50% at KI and 50% at St. Erik's Eye Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and, clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in ophthalmology with a profile in retinal diseases at St. Erik Eye Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in the field of ophthalmology or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

We are looking for a researcher specialized on retinal diseases and with a great commitment and interest in developing the field of ophthalmology. The applicant must be a nationally and internationally established researcher in the field of ophthalmology and retinal diseases. Applicants must have high quality publications in leading international journals over the past ten years, have documented national and international collaborations and have the potential to become one of the leading international researchers in the field. The applicant is expected to have substantial ongoing funding through grants obtained in competition, and is expected to pursue research at such a level that future significant funding can be ensured, sufficient to support the professorship long term.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2), and clinical expertise (3).

Particular merit is given to high level research in retinal disease, documented supervision of doctoral students and postdocs, and a publishing track record in the very top, area related, scientific journals with the applicant as senior author.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
