Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Health Economics Research Group

We develop and applies methodologies for the assessment of socioeconomic impact of neurodegenerative disease, as well as the economic evaluation of novel medical technologies in this area. The group possesses expertise in 1) registry-based and observational studies of disease progression and cost of illness, 2) health economic modelling and predictive analytics including deep learning methods 3) clinical trial design and clinical development with respect to value evidence generation 4) health policy analysis. We organize a recurrent conference on Pharmacoeconomics of Alzheimer’s disease (IPECAD), and collaborate extensively with other groups within Karolinska Institutet as well nationally and internationally. The research group has 10 members including senior scientists, postdocs and graduate students with a broad interdisciplinary backgrounds.

ADDITION, a multinational research project led by our group, aims to develop an individualized prognosis and cost-effectiveness model of Alzheimer’s disease. This model will support both clinical decision making and care planning at the individual level as well as resource allocation and cost-effectiveness assessments at the macro level. The model is developed by integrating data from existing disease registries and cohorts in five EU countries with de-novo collection of data on patient outcomes including quality of life, and using a combination of statistical and machine learning methods to simulate individual patient trajectories across the full duration of disease.

Your mission

The postdoc candidate will, together with senior scientists at KI and other consortium members, lead the development of a novel disease progression and cost-effectiveness model based on the integrated databased assembled in the ADDITION project. The candidate is expected to have skills and experience in model development and statistical programming, strong drive and an ambitious and innovative attitude. The projects are pursued in collaboration with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are necessary. Good ability to speak and write English is also a requirement. The position is a fixed-term employment of two years.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. A PhD in health economics, epidemiology, statistics, data science or similar topic is required. The postdoc to be recruited needs to have good knowledge and experience from development of disease progression models and/or health economic models. A high level of fluency in statistical programming (preferably R) is expected. Experience from neurodegenerative diseases is meriting.
