Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Neuroscience

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Applications are invited for a position as Professor in translational immunology. The position is placed at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Neuro division.

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education are conducted in collaboration with Region Stockholm as well as other research groups from Karolinska Institutet (KI) and other universities. Please visit our website for more information: ki.se/en/cns

The Neuro division has a long history of successful research within neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, stroke, brain tumors, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and brain and spinal cord injuries. Much of this research today focuses on the role of autoimmunity and neuroinflammation in diseases such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. A close collaboration between clinic and research has been central to the advances, where clinically anchored observations have driven research questions that have led to innovative method development, which in turn has been returned and applied in the clinic, to the benefit of care and patients. The researchers within the division have significantly contributed to the rapid progress in this field and have been successful in attracting internationally competitive research funding. This has led to advances such as identification of disease-specific pathogens and identification of possible new treatment strategies.

Currently, there are seven professors in neurology at the Neuro division, most of whom have a research focus towards neuroinflammation. It is now important to strengthen the methodological competence within translational immunology,

both to strengthen the immunological and neuroimmunological competence, and to increase the extent and quality by which the department's research is developed all the way to clinical application and innovation, so that new research findings and improved methods benefit the healthcare system both faster and to a larger degree.

Your mission

The position as a Professor in translational immunology is ideal for a competitive researcher with an established research group. The employment has a focus on research, and the applicant is expected to perform research, development, and application of immunological methods in studies of autoimmunity, neuroimmunology and neuroinflammation at an internationally high standard. The applicant is expected to successfully perform translational research, aimed at developing experimental research methods into clinical applications, and further into clinical trials. The employment requires that the applicant also participates in graduate, postgraduate and doctoral education, and in supervision of degree projects.

The Professorship may be combined with clinical employment.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research-and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have documented experience of having carried out internationally competitive research in the area of translational research, development of methods and innovation within immunology with a focus on neuroimmunology, as well as having obtained research funding in competition within this research area. The applicant shall demonstrate a high proficiency in written and spoken English.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (1) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

It is considered a merit if the applicant developed and applied immunological methods in studies of autoimmunity and neuroinflammation, both in animals and in humans. It is also considered a merit if the applicant has documented experience and success in translational research and can demonstrate an ability to develop experimental research methods for clinical application and innovation, translated into clinical practice. Having demonstrated collaboration with clinicians as well as having a well-established national and international collaboration in the research fields of immunology, neuroimmunology and autoimmunity is considered meritorious. Collaboration with, and experience from, the industry that reflects the applicant’s ability to utilize, innovate and clinically apply research findings and methods, is also considered a merit. Education in and experience from academic leadership is also a merit.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI in general, and to the activities at the Neuro division, CNS, in particular.
