Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Huddinge

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medicine, Huddinge, is one of the fastest growing clinical departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department has six units whose core activities involve translational research, PhD education and undergraduate education in several areas of internal medicine.

Immunology is a strong field of research at Karolinska Institutet. The field includes both basic studies of the immune system as well as immunological studies in various disease states, such as infectious diseases, autoimmunity, immune deficiency, cancer, and chronic inflammatory diseases. Cancer and chronic inflammation often affect the mucous membranes of various types of tissues and organs where knowledge of the function of the immune system is limited. Increased knowledge of tissue-specific immunological mechanisms in organs is required for us to better understand these challenging diseases and thus be able to improve diagnostics and optimize treatment strategies. For this purposes, Karolinska Institutet now seeks to establish a professorship focusing on translational tissue immunology.

Your mission

The position is focused on research and is part of a central strategic initiative with the aim of strengthening research activities in the field of tissue immunology, specifically translational research where patient materials are studied using advanced molecular biology and immunological platforms.

The holder of this professorship is expected to conduct research at the highest international level in the research field. The assignment includes leading and developing research in translational tissue immunology and strengthening this clinically important research at Karolinska Institutet. The applicant is therefore expected to be able to develop the bridge between clinic and basic research by establishing new translational projects and strengthening those that already exist. Well-functioning clinical collaborations ensure the availability of patient materials and advanced methodology is available to lead this development. We expect initiatives to ensure efficient exploitation of the research results, as well as active participation in both undergraduate and postgraduate education in this dynamic area.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet.)

The applicant must demonstrate high level of scientific expertise and activity in the field of translational tissue immunology, including extensive experience in immunology techniques such as advanced multicolor flow cytometry/cell sorting, cell culture and molecular biology. The documentation strengthening these competencies must include high-profile publications as well as research grants received in competition. A strong translational research profile and extensive experience, as well as a current research centered around analyses of patient tissue material is a requirement. The applicant must demonstrate successful supervision of doctoral student and postdoctoral fellows, as well as good pedagogical qualifications at the under- and post-graduate levels.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (1), leadership, and development and collaboration expertise (1).

Extensive experience in single-cell analysis will be considered a strong merit for the position since this technology is of fundamental importance for the development of this field of research. It is also a strong advantage if the applicant can show experience of successful management and development of complex projects as well as established collaborations with clinical researchers.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching (or have equivalent competence) in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
