The department of Learning, Informatics, Management, and Ethics (LIME) at Karolinska Institutet opens a position within medical clinical ethics. The professorship is tied to Stockholm Centre for Healthcare Ethics (CHE), a collaboration in medical ethics between concerned units at Stockholm University, Royal Institute of Technology, and Karolinska Institutet. CHE is a dynamic and active research center in medical ethics with established collaboration with Swedish authorities and health care.

This position is part of a central strategic initiative to improve the conditions for a strong, close and mutually enriching integration of education and research at different levels. The appointee is expected to take responsibility for leading the development of educational activities to ensure a research integrated education of high quality.

The subject of medical clinical ethics is of great importance for both education and research at KI as well as for the development of health care. The education in the area needs to be designed based on the needs that exist in the various programs at Karolinska Institutet, with a close connection to clinical ethics research. Medical clinical ethics is an important part of all of KI’s different programs at the undergraduate and advanced level as well as the doctoral student level. The subject includes questions about treatment, patient autonomy and its limits, treatment restrictions, self-chosen end of life, hidden values, ​​and value conflicts. It also includes system or organizational ethics issues such as issues of prioritization of patients and patient groups, public health ethics and leadership issues. 

Your role in education, postgraduate education and training, and research as well as collaboration in management and development is described below.

Education and doctoral education

You are expected to participate in teaching at the undergraduate, advanced and doctoral level in medical clinical ethics, and to participate in the pedagogical development of such education. You are also expected to develop and lead education to support education in the clinic, education for clinical supervisors and for other personnel, and to develop educational material. In addition you are expected to supervise doctoral students and postdocs. The position includes the responsibility for strengthening the subject of medical clinical ethics within the educational programs at KI.

Research

You are expected to initiate, conduct and lead research in the subject of medical clinical ethics. This includes research that strengthens the education at KI.

Leadership, development, and collaboration

You are expected to be a leader in the subject of medical clinical ethics at LIME / KI in collaboration with the managers of the educational programs. You are also expected to collaborate in the national networks for education in medical ethics and with the region and authorities in medico-ethical matters.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

To be eligible, the applicant must be established as an independent researcher in medical clinical ethics. The applicant must have very good pedagogical experience and skills as well as good administrative and collaboration skills. This must be proven through publications of good scientific quality in international journals in medical clinical ethics and documented teaching and pedagogical development work in medical clinical ethics of significance for practice and research as well as development and collaboration skills.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or have otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge.

Language skills in a Scandinavian language is required.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (3) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

Special emphasis will be placed on pedagogical merits in medical clinical ethics, in particular with regard to pedagogical development work in the field. Emphasis is also placed on experience of collaboration with authorities and health and medical care.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
