The department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB) is one of 22 departments at Karolinska Institutet, and consists of twelve divisions and about 270 employees. We pursue world-class research particularly focused on discovering the mechanisms that cause disease, comprising the areas of biochemistry, physiological chemistry, biomaterials, functional genomics, genome biology, inflammation, metabolism, molecular neurobiology, structural biology, chemical biology and vascular biology. We are located at Biomedicum, which is an exciting new environment where five of KI’s departments are co-located.

Subject

Glial Cell Biology is an area of research in the field of Neuroscience studying the biology and function/dysfunction of glial cells in health and disease. Recent developments in genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics and imaging technologies opens for new insights into glial cells. The subject of this professorship includes large scale single cell technologies, advanced mouse genetics and disease modeling, and the application of these methods on the applicant´s own biological questions with clinical relevance.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research.The successful applicant will pursue internationally leading research in neuroscience with focus on glial cell biology, pre-clinical teaching at the undergraduate and doctoral levels, supervision of doctoral and postdoctoral students, and be engaged in the development of the department and Karolinska Institutet as a whole. The professor is expected to act as principal investigator with delegated responsibility for grants, staff, work environment and other administrative duties at the department. Collaboration with other groups at the department, at KI and internationally, as well as outreach to the general society, are expected.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

Great emphasis is placed on the personal qualities required to further strengthen the subject of glial cell biology at Karolinska Institutet. The applicant must have well documented educational experience, as well as experience leading both research and education.

The person we are looking for is an active and world-leading scientist in glial cell biology and the work includes both experimental work and computational analysis. There is a documented experience of engagements in collaborations nationally and internationally addressing fundamental biological and/or disease-related questions with the single focus on making new and important discoveries. These activities could be evident e.g. by publications, positions of trust and by participation in international collaborations.

The applicant must have very substantial ongoing funding through grants obtained in competition, and is expected to pursue research at such a level that future significant funding can be ensured, sufficient to support the professor.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (1), and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

Particular merit is given to excellence in research in glial cell biology, nervous system development, neurodegeneration and single cell technologies, publishing in the very top scientific journals with the applicant as senior author.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If  the  person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
