The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. The Institute of Environmental Medicine conducts cutting-edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Karolinska Institutet has knowledge on musculoskeletal health. However, both The Institute of Environmental Medicine and Karolinska Institutet lack knowledge on prevention of recurrent and persistent musculoskeletal disorders with a special focus on systematic development and evaluation of interventions and on how these interventions can be implemented in society. A research position with focus on prevention of recurrent and persistent musculoskeletal disorders at The Institute of Environmental Medicine will contribute to the development of a multidisciplinary perspective to musculoskeletal health, that integrates rehabilitation and prevention of pain.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The Assistant Professor will conduct research projects within the area of musculoskeletal health with a special focus on the systematic development and evaluation of interventions, in addition to the implementation of these interventions into society. The focus will be on prevention. The tasks also include responsibility for courses and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as supervision at postgraduate level. The Assistant Professor will also be collaborating with external partners, such as manual therapists. Collaboration with these external partners is considered very important for the position of Assistant Professor in musculoskeletal health.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.

Bases of assessment

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants. The Assistant Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

We are looking for an independent researcher who is at the forefront of research in the area of development and evaluation of musculoskeletal health interventions, specifically preventive interventions. The applicant must have a solid knowledge of evidence-based practice, musculoskeletal health, systematic development of interventions, and effect- and cost evaluation. Clinical experience as a chiropractor is advantageous as the job will require an understanding of common procedures and terminology. International contacts and collaborations at foreign universities and research groups are of importance. It is an advantage if the applicant has obtained external funding in competition. Leadership, development and collaboration expertise are considered important.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
