At the Department of Global Public Health, we conduct research, teaching and applied work based on public health science and epidemiology. The department has 9 research groups, around 80 doctoral students and about 140 employees. We conduct public health-related research projects with the aim to understand social, behavioural and lifestyle determinants of health as well as developing and evaluating public health interventions. Our researchers are often involved in translating research results into health policy and public health practice in high- and low-income settings. The Department is responsible for several doctoral programmes as well as undergraduate and advanced level of education, in public health science, global health and public health epidemiology.

The Social medicine, infectious diseases and migration (SIM) Group
The SIM research group studies social determinants and consequences of disease, evaluates interventions to improve health care access and equity, assesses the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of interventions to promote health and equity in access to care. The group is multidisciplinary and uses social epidemiology, qualitative methods, digital technology as well as health economy and implementation science research methods.

Your mission

This position is focused on global health, with specific emphasis on addressing gaps in implementation research. The work will be operationalized through several large projects and primarily focuses on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), tuberculosis, social protection and maternal, newborn and sexual reproductive health.

You will work on your own independent line of research, in global health, with a specific emphasis on addressing gaps in implementation research particularly through health economics, qualitative and quantitative methods and intervention design, implementation and evaluation with a main focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). You will be expected to apply for research grants to support on-going research activities.

You are also expected to participate in teaching on both undergraduate level and in the Global Health and Public Health MSc programmes, and deliver doctoral courses. Teaching subjects include global health, maternal and child health, social protection, social determinants of health, health economics, implementation research design, data management and support thesis project supervision.

You are also expected to contribute to the department through doctoral supervision, attending and organising seminar sessions, and joining committees or taking on supportive administrative roles. 

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 5 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

The candidate must have a doctorate in Global or Public Health with a research portfolio focusing on health economics as well as the social determinants and consequences of non-communicable diseases (NCD), communicable diseases including tuberculosis and maternal and child ill health in LMICs. The candidate should be self-motivated with a proven track record in designing research programmes, working well within teams and being able to communicate effectively.

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor. Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.

Bases of assessment

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

The applicant should have demonstrated good ability to:

  • Communicate research in English via peer-reviewed publications and presentations
  • Serve as main supervisor for PhD students and master students
  • Teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in global health, health economics, and social determinants of health
  • Plan and lead large interdisciplinary research projects in LMICs
  • Obtain research funding from national or international funders
  • Develop research collaborations with international partners
  • Collaborate with international organizations
  • Design, implement and analyse research projects using quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as health economic methodologies
  • Serve as course leader and develop courses at undergraduate and/or graduate levels

It is desirable that the applicant also has:

  • Knowledge and documented experience of systematic literature reviews.
  • Experience of studying and working abroad
  • Pedagogic skills documented via course evaluations
  • Formal pedagogical training and be able to demonstrate his/her continued commitment to teaching development
  • Experience of project management
  • Have an independent line of research

It is especially desirable that the applicant also has:

  • Experience of designing, coordinating and implementing multi-country projects related to maternal and child health or TB and social determinants, in low-income contexts globally, with particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia.

Personal qualities and characteristics will be particularly important given the focus on team-work and international collaboration, ie it is important that you are communicative and posess great collaboration skills.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
