Postdoctoral Researcher in Environmental Epidemiology

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

At the Unit of Environmental Epidemiology, Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) we have a strong track record of successful national and international large-scale studies in environmental epidemiology investigating health effects of air pollution and noise. In a multidisciplinary environment we collaborate with leading research groups in Europe and the US using advanced study designs committed to provide robust research data to inform public health policy. Your mission

As a postdoctoral researcher you will be involved in researching health effects of major environmental exposures such as air pollution, noise and temperature. The emphasis will be on cardio-metabolic outcomes.

Your role will include coordination and research output for two projects:

1) A national collaboration project to study the cardiovascular and metabolic effects of traffic noise exposure in the state-of-the-art Swedish CardioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) including advanced imaging studies of vasculature and fatty deposits from 30 000 participants in 6 Swedish cities.

2) An international collaboration including top scientists from Harvard University, Boston University, Ben Gurion University and the Public Health Foundation of India to study health effects of air pollution and temperature in India using advanced satellite-based modeling.

The work will include coordination and facilitation of data collection and management, data analyses and manuscript preparation in collaboration with other researchers. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to undertake a limited amount of teaching, supervise students, and participate in health risk assessments.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

Eligibility for this position includes a PhD degree within medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics or related field, formal education in epidemiology or biostatistics and experience in epidemiological research. The successful applicant has a high level of proficiency in statistical methods applicable to epidemiology and be an independent user of statistical software (preferably STATA or R). You are organized, responsible, enjoy working in a team, and have demonstrated oral and written fluency in English. Merits include Swedish proficiency, biomedical knowledge including cardiovascular disease or diabetes, air pollution assessment, noise assessment, spatial modeling and GIS knowledge, and experience with big data sets.
