The aim of our research is to identify and prevent chemical, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial health hazards in the work environment. Our main activities include research, education and dissemination of information. The research groups at the unit are multi-professional and include epidemiologists, statisticians, physicians, psychologists sociologists, physiotherapists, civil engineers, public health specialists and others. The unit takes part in education of medical students, occupational health nurses and physicians, and specialists in occupational and environmental medicine.

We are looking for several people who want to work in epidemiological studies with a focus on Occupational and environmental medicine. These will be stationed in a clinical research group active at the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine (CAMM) at Stockholm Region, but be employed in the Occupational Medicine unit at IMM, Karolinska Institutet. Both IMM and CAMM are located in and near the Karolinska Institutet Solna Campus.

Your mission

We currently have several ongoing projects on various issues related to work and health. In all projects, as a post doc, you are expected to participate in data collection, data management, analysis as well as authoring of scientific articles in English and in some cases also reports in Swedish. The studies are done in collaboration with researchers from other universities both in Sweden and abroad. As a postdoc, you are also expected to participate in the teaching of students at master's level and in some cases also be co-supervisors for doctoral students.

You as a Post doc will work in one of the following areas.

A) The relationship between Chemical and Physical Exposures and Health.

You as a postdoc will participate in research projects with the following research questions:

  1. Does noise, vibration and shiftwork during pregnancy affect the risk of adverse fetal effects?
  2. Do chemical and physical exposures in the work environment affect the risk of cardiovascular disease

B) Non-standard work arrangements - effects on health, work and families

You as a postdoc will participate in a research program whose overall purpose is to

  1. Deepen the understanding of how non-standard work arrangements affect individuals, families and communities and how these contribute to inequalities in work environment, health and well-being.
  2. Identify initiatives that counteract the negative effects of non-standard work arrangements and increase the ability of workers to participate, exercise empowerment, and live healthy lives.

C) Mental health in adolescence and the paths ahead. An ecological life course approach to mental health development into adulthood

You as a postdoc will participate in a research program whose overall purpose is to analyse the importance of mental health in adolescence for well-being and health status into adult age. The proposed programme applies data from an outstanding 32-year prospective cohort study of school-leavers with uniquely high continuing participation rate.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

We are looking for a highly motivated person with a strong interest in occupational and environmental medicine and epidemiology. By the start of your employment, you should have a PhD in Medical Science, Public Health, Work Life Sciences or similar. You should have a relevant background in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, epidemiology and / or medicine. You can, for example, have a medical degree, be a trained occupational hygienist, a civil engineer with a suitable background or have a master’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Work Life Science or Public Health Science with epidemiology focus or Biostatistics. Previous experience in epidemiological research is a requirement. Good skills in statistical software, such as SAS, R or STATA are required. It is also a requirement that the applicant can express himself well in English and Swedish both orally and in writing. Teaching experience is a merit.
