At the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS), world-leading research is conducted in aging, dementia, epidemiology and health care, where the division for General Medicine and Primary Care is one of 7 divisions. At the division, teaching is conducted at undergraduate and graduate levels, mainly within the medical program, and we are responsible for a number of course elements that in total correspond to about 15 of the programs 220 weeks, and include the introductory course, clinical placement on almost all semesters, and the program's integrated final exam. We continuously run a clinical research school, as well as independent courses and contract education. The postgraduate (doctoral) education currently comprises about 30 doctoral students.

Your mission

This position is part of a central strategic initiative to improve the conditions for a strong, close and mutually enriching integration of education and research at different levels. The appointee is expected to take responsibility for leading the development of educational activities to ensure a research integrated education of high quality.

We are looking for a registered physician who is a specialist in family medicine with extensive experience in teaching and development of education at university level, who conducts high-quality research and is internationally recognized in the research area. The holder of the professorship is expected to lead education and research in family medicine related to the section.

The position is focused on education and research. The main tasks consist of teaching related to family medicine and general practice, research supervision and research. The work will also to varying degrees include management, faculty development and administration, at division level and at the department. The work on education primarily concerns the medical program. Research supervision is mainly in the area of ​​clinical research, and the research will be conducted in areas that are relevant to the family medicine, and are related to the research areas of the division. The duties are designed and adapted based on the applicant's competence and interest, in accordance with the needs of the division, and may change over time.

The position may be combined with clinical duty as specialist in family medicine in Region Stockholm area where the holder is expected to participate in the development of university health care with commitment in clinical teaching, research, development and innovation.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must have good skills in pedagogy and extensive teaching experience, and be an established researcher in the research area. Since the teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish, good knowledge of Swedish in speech and writing is also required.

The applicant must also be a registered physician and specialist expertise in family medicine/general practice (or equivalent for applicants outside Sweden) and fulfill the National Board of Health's requirements for the practice of the medical profession in Sweden.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or have otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (3) and leadership, and development and collaboration expertise (2).

Scientific competence refers to independence in planning, conducting and leading research as well as communicating research with the surrounding community. Pedagogical competence refers to independence in planning, implementing and leading teaching with both breadth and depth, as well as a reflective approach to teaching and learning. Furthermore, experience in management and development assignments, as well as formal leadership training, is a merit.

It is of importance that the candidate has experience of pedagogical/educational development work or research. Particular merits are documented experience, educational leadership assignments, as well as teaching and supervision at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral educational levels. Merit is also experience of educational collaboration with students and the surrounding community including professionals from different professions.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
