Karolinska Institutet, Department of Public Health Sciences
At the Department of Public Health Sciences, we conduct research, teaching and applied work based on public health science and epidemiology. The department has 9 research groups, around 80 doctoral students and about 140 employees. We conduct public health-related research projects with the aim to understand social, behavioural and lifestyle determinants of health as well as developing and evaluating public health interventions. Our researchers are often involved in translating research results into health policy and public health practice in high- and low-income settings. The Department is responsible for several doctoral programmes as well as undergraduate and advanced level of education, in public health science, global health and public health epidemiology.

The Global and Sexual Health research group (GloSH)
Research at the Department is conducted within areas such as global health, public health epidemiology, and social medicine. This position is focused on global health, with specific emphasis on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in low- and middle-income contexts. Our research is conducted within different areas pertaining to SRHR, such as adolescent health, prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, contraceptive use, migrant health, gender equality, gender-based violence, health economics and eHealth. The group consists of interdisciplinary researchers with extensive experience of both qualitative and quantitative study design and project implementation in weak health system.

Duties
We are searching for a passionate researcher committed to using their skills for advancing the SRHR research field globally, grounded in the 2030 Agenda. Duties involve research and education within the area of global health, with focus on SRHR from a rights-based perspective.  In addition, the applicant is expected to initiate new individual research projects, based on the applicant’s  focus areas. Of particular interest are projects focused on SRHR among adolescent and youth populations in low-and middle-income settings.

Major tasks include:
- Plan and lead research projects within an international environment with focus on low- and middle-income countries.
- Initiate and design new projects and apply for research funding.
- Supervise PhD students and master students.
- Teaching at graduate and undergraduate levels.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time-limited to 5,5 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer. The employment can be extended up to 6 years due to sick-leave, parental leave or other special circumstances. In the role of Assistant Professor, you will be given the opportunity to develop as an independent researcher and merit both in term of science and pedagogy. Following the merit period, you can apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer in line with the criteria further below.

Eligibility requirements
Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD in public health science, epidemiology, or medicine. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.

The ideal candidate has in-depth knowledge and extensive experience with areas related to SRHR, with focus on project management and interventions to promote SRHR in low- and middle-income countries, particularly among young people. You have a strong commitment to SRHR from a global perspective, including issues related to adolescent health and gender equality. The work is highly independent and requires documented experience of working and leading projects in low-income contexts. A large share of the work is conducted in teams, and in close collaboration with the surrounding community, which require skills related to teamwork, accountability and ability to take initiatives. Experience from research and development work within international organisations and non-governmental organisations is an asset. The candidate should be able to teach in both Swedish and English.

Assessment criteria
Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

The applicant should have demonstrated good ability to:
- Communicate research in speech and writing both in Swedish and in English via peer-reviewed publications and presentations
- Supervise PhD students and master students
- Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels
- Plan and lead interdisciplinary research projects in low- and middle-income countries
- Obtain research funding from external donors - Develop research collaborations with international partners
- Very good knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative methods and advanced analytical capacity.

It is desirable that the applicant also has:
- Knowledge and documented experience of systematic literature reviews.
- Experience of studying and working abroad - Experience of course leadership at undergraduate and/or graduate levels - Pedagogic skills documented via course evaluations

It is especially desirable that the applicant also has: - Experience of designing, coordinating and implementing multi-country projects related to SRHR in low-income contexts globally, with particular focus on Eastern and Southern Africa. - Experience of research and development work within international organisations including the UN, and close collaboration with civil society.

- Experience of undertaking assignments for the scientific community, such as commissions of trusts, editorships and organisation of conferences and courses.

Personal qualities and characteristics will be particularly important given the focus on team work and international collaboration.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer
An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
