Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics (LIME) focuses on some of the key areas important to fulfilling the motto of Karolinska Institutet to improve human health ́. At LIME, research, development and education is conducted in the following areas: medical and healthcare education, informatics, management, ethics, and suicide prevention. LIME has about 150 employees and is located in Widerströmska huset at Solna Campus. ki.se/lime.  The position is placed in the Unit for Bioentrepreneurship in the Medical Management Center.

We seek an lecturer for science communication education at LIME, specifically at the doctoral level for “To communicate science in different contexts with focus on oral and visual communication.”  The course is given by the Unit for Bioentrepreneurship in the Medical Management Center in the Department for learning, informatics, management and ethics (LIME), Karolinska Institutet. 

About the education
The main activity is as future course responsible and examiner for the free-standing doctoral course, To communicate science in different contexts with focus on oral and visual communication.  The course is aimed for doctoral students and is approved and established by The Board of Doctoral Education at Karolinska Institutet. The course aims are to orally and visually present ones own research that has been adapted to different target groups and to reflect on ones own as well as ones peers presentation skills and abilities.

The course syllabus can be found here: http://kiwas.ki.se/katalog/kursplan/show/2311 The course is offered for 3 higher education credits and is offered via blended learning over 3-weeks with 5-6 days of the course scheduled as Face-2-Face sessions on campus.

The pedagogy is based on current research in the field, best practices from professionals, as well as the course participants' experiences in science communication.

Duties
The work entails course management including teaching and course administration and places high demands on accuracy, flexibility and planning ability. The duties include planning and conducting courses, planning and implementing adequate course content, budgeting, scheduling, ensuring and booking resources for implementation, assessing and evaluating the course participants' work, communicating with course participants as well as with the department's teachers and administrative staff, and any guest lecturers. In addition, the work involves communication with the university's doctoral course and programme committee, as well as follow-up and evaluation of learning, and working with the course administrator on applying for reimbursements.  Further, the position would include participation in the preparation of revised syllabi if needed and/or application for additional free-standing courses in Science Communication. The tasks can be developed and changed over time as needed.

The current scope of the position is 20% or higher depending upon if the course is further developed and approved with funding in science communication in the future.

Qualifications
Those eligible to be hired as lecturer are the ones who have both demonstrated pedagogical skill, and partly completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence in the subject area relevant to the duties.

The following qualifications are requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in the subject of science education or science communication
  • Excellent theoretical knowledge of science education and communication
  • Experience of practical work with science communication
  • Experience of teaching at the university level in science communication
  • Theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge in specifically oral and visual science communication
  • Educational skills in the subject of science communication and education
  • Experience in managing and managing group dynamic processes in teaching situations
  • Very good knowledge of both English & Swedish in speech and writing as well as good communication ability
  • Accuracy, flexibility and planning ability

The following qualifications are strongly merited:

  • Experience of work as manager
  • Experience in developing educational courses or programs
  • Experience with learner assessment and evaluation
  • Experience with science communication with the public
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of using relevant digital education platforms (Pingpong, Canvas)
  • Experience with flipped classroom and innovative lecturing/teaching activities including engagement with the public 

Bases of assessment
In connection with the appointment of Lecturers, we will accord special weight to teaching skills.
