As professor in Nuclear Medicine at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery at the Karolinska Institutet, you will also work within the nuclear medicine department at the Karolinska University Hospital. The hospital has the largest nuclear medicine department in Sweden with a total of 5 PET/CT, 4 SPECT/CT and 1 PET/MR at the two sites (Huddinge and Solna). Clinical research areas mainly includes cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The department is highly involved with radionuclide therapy in collaboration with other clinical departments. The department produce academic and clinical excellence through highly qualified staff and a well-functioning infrastructure for clinical trials. A new radiopharmacy facility with high-end capacity has recently been established at the hospital, site Solna, providing the backbone for PET tracer development.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The position is of strategic importance for the development of clinical nuclear medicine in both the imaging and therapeutic aspects of the field and includes the evaluation and introduction of new radiopharmaceuticals.

The employment includes the following duties and areas of responsibilities:

  • To contribute to the successful execution of the strategic plan of the department. Responsibility for the strategic plan for clinical research within the area of clinical molecular imaging of cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Participate in the Research, Development and Education meetings held at the department at the hospital.

  • Scientific and clinical tutoring within above mentioned areas, including formal supervision in research and education at different academic and professional levels.

  • To enable an environment based on a multidisciplinary cooperation in research, development and education. This includes establishing a platform for translational research covering all areas from basic science to clinical trials. Active contribution to enable regional, national and international collaborations in molecular imaging in medicine which includes postgraduate and student exchange programs.

  • To contribute to the development of a sustainable and comprehensive program for the education and continued development of clinical professions within the nuclear medicine area.

  • To participate in the clinical diagnostic work at the department of nuclear medicine at the hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant is expected to demonstrate documented successful experience in:

  • Strategic development within the field of nuclear medicine, preferably encompassing both the imaging and therapeutic aspects.

  • Management and conducting clinical trials.

  • Attracting external research funding.

  • Management of a multiprofessional/multidisciplinary research group.

  • Participation in multiprofessional/multidisciplinary networks for the development of nuclear medicine research, preferably both at national and international level.

  • Teaching of health professionals, undergraduate and graduate students in medicine and other subjects related to the field of nuclear medicine.

The employment will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in Nuclear Medicine, Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Nuclear Medicine, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. If the appointee fulfills the Karolinska University Hospital’s requirements for employment as Senior Registrar or Senior Consultant, the appointee can be offered this position.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish at least corresponding to the C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Bases of assessment 

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3) educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
