Department

The Department of Neurobiology Care Sciences and Society (NVS) comprises 8  divisions and has about 500 employees. The NVS-department is located at KI-Campus Flemingsberg. The department is responsible for education at basic and advanced levels, research education and clinical and experimental research within the different areas represented by the divisions. 

NVS conducts experimental, clinical, health care science and epidemiological research with particular focus on aging and diseases in the elderly. Our research within the area of dementia is at the international forefront. Successful research is also conducted in various other areas including stroke, cancer and rheumatology. The research is translational, ranging from genes to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and care. The greater part of our research is thus carried out in close collaboration with the health care sector and we strive to quickly implement it into clinical practice.

Division

The division of clinical geriatrics conducts research and education in geriatrics at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as doctoral education. The research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment focusing on neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia and Parkinson's disease but also on drugs in the elderly, clinical nutrition, stroke and rehabilitation. Our methodology expertise is on imaging, registry studies and translational research. The division has close collaboration with the department of Geriatric Medicine (Tema Aging) at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge. The activities are multidisciplinary and include medical research as well as research in the field of psychology, physio -, occupational- and speech therapy.

Duties

We are looking for a qualified and dedicated researcher with a strong commitment to develop the research and education in geriatric medicine with focus on frailty and cognition. The professorship will be established at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Division of Clinical Geriatrics. The candidate will be expected to develop the subject of geriatrics as well as to supervise students, PhD candidates and post-docs. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for the important task to increase the level of research-based education. Responsibilities include development and teaching at graduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.

The duties will be focusing on strategic research management, supervision of graduate students, teaching and own research activities as well as stimulating national and international collaborations. Research and related activities may be conducted at KI in collaboration with Karolinska University Hospital. The tasks will be designed and adapted based on the candidate's skills and interests and may change over time.

The appointment as a professor will, by special agreement, be combined with clinical part-time employment at Theme Aging Karolinska University Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and educational expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and when clinical expertise, (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet). The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or have otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. For this position, documented ability to coordinate and lead is a requirement.

The Division is looking for a person with documented proficiency in teaching and development of teaching at the university level, as well as proven academic leadership.

Extensive experience in teaching at basic- advanced and research education levels is required and research in pedagogics is a merit. Ongoing tutorship of in research education is a strong merit. The candidate should also possess a solid research position in the field of geriatrics with focus on frailty, multimorbidity and cognition with a strong ongoing publication record in international scientific journals as well as documented experience with national and international collaborations. Formal professional education as physician with an MD degree and a board certificate in geriatric medicine is required.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in geriatrics at Theme Aging Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in geriatrics, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Bases of assessment

The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: educational expertise (3), research expertise (3), clinical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).  

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
