Department of Clinical Sciences, Danderyd Hospital, in its present form, was founded in 1993. Annually, approximately 400 students acquire their basic medical training at the Division of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Clinical Physiology, Clinical Chemistry, Diagnostic Radiology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Orthopaedic Surgery. KI DS is involved in a wide range of clinical research in various fields. The Department has 80 registered PhD students, resulting in approwimately 5-10 dissertations per year. Approximately 90 scientific articles, published in internationally recognised scientific journals, originate from KI DS each year. Extensive research is also done on commission. The Department offers a number of specialist courses in various fields and supplementary training courses for specialists.

Duties

The position has a focus on research. The clinical department of Orthopedic surgery at Danderyd has broad clinical practice, not least joint replacement surgery, including advanced revisional surgery. The division of orthopedic surgery, KI DS carries out patient focused research related to the hospital's patient groups in orthopedic surgery, as well as education during the surgical semester, within the medical program. The department now wants to recruit a new professor who will lead the research and also overall be responsible for teaching within the subject at the division of orthopedic surgery. The appointee will lead the activities of the division of orthopedic surgery. The holder of the position will have a responsibility as examiner of the medical students at the division, but the emphasis of the position is on leading the research. Since the joint replacement activity at clinical department is extensive we would prefer for the holder of the position to have a clinical profile of revisional joint replacement surgery.

The position is split between 50% clinical practice and 50% academic practice.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and, clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist physician in orthopedic surgery, specialized in joint replacements (in particular revisional surgery) at a healthcare facility for medical training and research and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in orthopedic surgery, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden, including proficiency in Swedish, as the position contains patient contact.

The holder needs to have a very good cooperation and leadership ability to work with other hospitals in Stockholm to coordinate the teaching of medical students.


Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2), and clinical expertise (2).

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
