Our research group is entitled “Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery” and includes senior and junior researchers, biostatisticians, administrator, PhD candidates and medical students. We conduct clinical and epidemiological research in diseases and surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract, i.e. the oesophagus and stomach, with a focus on cancer. Our research databases mainly originate from large clinical data collections and national health data registries. We have large networks, a structured approach to developing new research projects, and run research seminar series, journal clubs and methods clubs. In the last external research assessment of all research groups at KI (ERA 2010) our group was rated ‘outstanding’ in cancer research, the highest score possible. Duties
We are looking for a skilled postdoctoral researcher with documented experience in research methods of relevance for the position, i.e. clinical or epidemiological research, ideally examining upper gastrointestinal diseases. Qualifying factors include documented experience in epidemiological methods, register-based research, statistical analysis, and writing of successful scientific manuscripts and grant applications. The main focus is on research, including conducting original scientific studies, but also meta-analyses and reviews. Teaching is limited, but might include teaching at PhD courses, seminars, and journal clubs. The successful candidate will be supervised by Jesper Lagergren and is expected to collaborate or communicate well with all members of the group. 

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Bases of assessment
Applications will be evaluated based on the scientific qualifications of the applicant as well as the experience and skills described above. We stress scientific quality when assessing applicants. Skills in clinical research methods and study design (modern epidemiology) as well as biostatistics are particularly qualifying. The successful applicant should have good competence in analysis and interpretation of clinical and epidemiological research data, and be skilled in writing scientific articles in English. Documented knowledge and interest in upper gastrointestinal diseases and clinical medicine is also qualifying. We want to stress that competence in laboratory techniques and basic science methods are not of particular relevance for this position.

Important personal characteristics include curiosity, engagement, and social competence. Good collaboration skills are required. Excellent skills in English are required, both in writing and oral (because English is the official language of the group).

For the employment we give the main weight to scientific skills (factor 3), but we also consider experience in teaching (factor 1), clinical work (factor 1) and administrative competence (factor 1).

This position is for two years, but an extension with up to two more years might be possible. Full-time work is the main plan, but part-time work can be considered if the successful candidate so prefers.
