Section for Anesthesia and Intensive Care

The Section for Anesthesia and Intensive care is closely connected to the clinical service within Function Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care (PMI) at the Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge. Here, a broad array of research and educational programs are carried out within perioperative and intensive care, PMI being one of the most productive academic units in Sweden. 

Research covers front-line programs on risk prediction and prevention in the perioperative period and metabolism and nutrition in the ICU and perioperative period. The research in metabolism and nutrition is internationally leading. Questions posed are mechanistic, explorative, and of effectiveness/efficacy, where the latter are investigated in randomized controlled clinical trials and relevant patient registers and data bases.

The academic activities are based on well-established infrastructure for seminaries and a clinical research units connected to an advanced laboratory unit. The laboratory unit also serve as a Core Facility within Karolinska Institutet. Within PMI there is also a unit for outcome studies based on data registers.

Duties

The applicant is expected to perform clinical and translational research and to maintain and develop active research collaboration on a national as well as an international level. The applicant will also be responsible for doctoral education and undergraduate education in Anesthesia and Intensive care connected to Karolinska Institutet, Campus Huddinge.

The applicant is responsible for that education compile with expectation from the university and other educational schools in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet.  The applicant is expected to participate in the education and in pedagogical development of the methods used. The applicant is supposed to be part of collegial meeting at the Function of PMI Huddinge.

The position will be combined with clinical duties as physician with specialization in Anesthesia and Intensive care at Function PMI at the Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the person must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise.

The employment will be combined with a position as specialist trained physician at Function PMI at the Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge, therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Anesthesia and Intensive care or equivalent, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

There is a demand of proficient English knowledge at appointment and proficient knowledge in Swedish within one year after.

Bases of assessment 

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will consequently weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), clinical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the candidates’ merits and expertise KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities.
