Division

The section of Translational Neuropharmacology is part of Karolinska's Center for Molecular Medicine, located on the Solna campus. The section studies receptor-mediated processes involved in the etiologies of Parkinson's disease and depression, using both preclinical models (in vitro technologies, cell lines, animal models) and specimens from human patients. Biochemical, molecular biological, pharmacological, histological and behavioral techniques are being used in the laboratory.

 

Duties

The role of the successful applicant will involve project coordination and laboratory management including: responsibility for coordinating clinical and laboratory logistics of the practical handling of blood and CSF samples from Parkinson Disease patients and healthy controls; close collaboration with specialist physicians at Center for Neurology; close collaboration with laboratory members to tailor techniques to their research projects. The applicant will be proactive in the implementation of procedural improvements to ensure that the lab runs safely and efficiently; in addition, she/he will also be responsible for the development and application of novel strategies for biomarker analysis for diagnosis and prediction of Parkinson Disease.

The applicant will serve as the point of contact between the laboratory and commercial providers of equipment, instruments and kits regarding issues of customer support and warranties.

The position involves communicating clearly and effectively with both national and international scientists and staff.

The applicant will edit scientific manuscripts and other scientific documents in English.

In carrying out the described duties, the applicant is expected to be very proactive, responsible, and independent and have strong interest for experimentation.

 

Entry requirements

 

Formal qualifications: Applicants must have MD, PhD degree. Minimum 10 years of experience as project leader in the field of neuroscience. Experience as a lab manager is preferable. Excellent spoken and written English

Laboratory experience: Knowledge and experience in developing methods and assays is required. Technical experience with biochemical and molecular biological methods, such as RNA and DNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, real-time PCR, cloning, and transfection is required. Knowledge on electrophoretic techniques and protein separation is a plus. Training and experience in biosafety and chemical safety is required. Good working knowledge of software (such as Microsoft Office, GraphPad Prism) is expected.

Additional experience: The ideal candidate has experience with time-management and is able to structure their work to maximize efficiency. Very good administrative skills are desired. Experience in writing scientific manuals and manuscripts is mandatory. Clinical experience is desired.

Skills and attitudes: Excellent proficiency in the English language and very strong communication skills are absolutely required, as regular effective communication with laboratory members, international company representatives, and grant project members will be an important part of the duties. Further, the applicant will be highly organized, which includes excellent time-management skills as well as keeping very detailed and comprehensive records of all communication, experimental plans and laboratory procedures. The applicant should have the ability to build professional relationships and communicate with a variety people of various professional and cultural backgrounds.
