Department
At the Department of Public Health Sciences we conduct research, teaching and applied work based on public health science and epidemiology. The research is aimed at analysing health determinants on the population level, and developing and evaluating preventative structural and individualised measures, including legislation and guidelines. The field also includes health economics, health systems research and implementation research. Our activities have a strong international profile, and the Department's researchers are scientific advisers to authorities and other decision-makers on the regional, national and international level. The Department is divided into research groups operating within the fields of global health, public health epidemiology and social medicine with a total of 140 employees. In addition, we have around 70 PhD students.

Research group
The position is located within the Global health - Health systems and policy research group, subgroup Improving use of medicines, focusing antibiotics.  Health systems and policy research cover both research on and for policy. Our vision is to achieve health and equity in an interdependent world by improving health systems and policies. We strive to contribute to knowledge generation and knowledge sharing through multidisciplinary research, education and policy dialogue for improved coverage, quality, and equity of health systems. We use a systems perspective on global health while focusing on specific and well-defined topics and research questions. Improving the use of medicines is one of the major topics within the group especially the use of antibiotics and addressing its adverse impact for both public health and the environment.

The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
The doctoral education project will focus on antibiotic residues and resistance in environment with focus on Asia. The doctoral student will investigate and analyse the occurrence of antibiotic residues in various environmental compartments and its contribution to adverse health effects, will assess and evaluate the level of its potential ecological risk for resistance development, risk of resistance development in humans and further the direct risk to human health of exposure to antibiotics and combined exposure to multiple antibiotic residues via drinking water and food items.

The doctoral student will have the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary international research environment and draw on expertise in public health, infectious diseases, biostatistics, risk assessment, toxicology and other relevant disciplines. The doctoral student is expected to contribute to the study design, analysis, writing of manuscripts and publication of results. The student will participate in the doctoral courses at KI, and is also expected to contribute to teaching and research dissemination.  

Entry requirements for doctoral education at KI
To be eligible for doctoral education following requirements has to be met:

General entry requirements
A person meets the general entry requirements for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education (according to Higher Education Ordinance Chapt 7, section 39) if he/she:

1. has been awarded advanced/second-cycle/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle/master level, or
3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements
Proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school:
Proficiency in the English language can be documented by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL or IELTS, see web-link below for more information.
Applicants who meet the general entry requirements (1 or 2 above) from a university in one of the Nordic countries fulfill the requirements in English.

The applicant must have a Bachelor degree within Pharmacy and relevant advanced university degree in environment and public health. Advanced courses in global health is considered as an advantage.

Very good knowledge in English as well as good knowledge in Swedish, both orally and in writing, is required.

Skills and personal qualities
The applicant must have experience of working with data from low- and middle income countries within the global health field and antibiotics in the environment. Further, experience of working with literature review within the same area is considered an advantage. It is also considered an advantage if the applicant is a co-author of at least one relevant international peer reviewed publication in an area relevant to the research field.

The applicant must be a good communicator and be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.  

Assessment criteria
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment:
- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
- Analytical skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
