The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including aging, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. Aging is one of the main risk factors for morbidity and mortality. Thus, pharmaceuticals that would target aging and slow down its progression bear great potential to improve human health and quality of life. Unfortunately, identifying such pharmaceuticals is difficult; but we are in the unique position to have developed a strategy that can identify such pharmaceuticals by the combination of high-throughput transcriptomic screening and machine-learning based data analysis. We now use this strategy to identify new aging-preventive compounds and validate them in in vitro and in vivo models of aging.

Your mission

We are looking for a Postdoc to join our research group. The group is headed by Christian Riedel and studies the molecular mechanisms that regulate age-related decline, combining insights from model organisms and humans. The focus of this fully funded position is to use and refine our newly developed human cell-culture based screening platform that by means of high-throughput transcriptomics and machine-learning-based analysis can identify new aging-preventive candidate compounds (See also Janssens et al., Cell Reports 2019, for a proof-of-concept study demonstrating the potential of our screening approach.). Newly identified candidate compounds shall then be analyzed by aging-related assays in cell culture and eventually mice. The postdoc will establish these validation assays and put them to use.

This is a collaboration project with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and with sequencing experts at Karolinska Institutet. Further, the Postdoc will synergize with aging biologists and bioinformaticians from the Riedel lab and be part of a larger aging-focused research environment at our department, which also contains the labs of Martin Bergö and Maria Eriksson.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated scientist with a doctoral degree and strong background in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, and/or Biochemistry. Good expertise in mammalian cell culture techniques is a requirement. A background in the biology of aging or in high-content screening methodology is appreciated but not essential. Applicants are expected to work independently but as part of an enthusiastic team and to be proficient in English. They shall play a leading role in experimental design, experimentation, analysis, and the presentation/publication of their results. 
The applicant will be encouraged to apply for competitive national and international postdoctoral fellowships and career grants and will receive support in those endeavors.

Your profile

To be qualified for employment as a Postdoctoral Researcher, you need to hold a PhD or doctoral degree at the time of application. However, researchers who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) starting date of the employment. This must be confirmed by the applicant's main supervisor, department head, or equivalent.
