- with focus on research
Do you want to contribute to improving human health?
Research at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is conducted in physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, and occupational and environmental medicine, with a focus on clarifying how environmental and lifestyle factors affect human health. IMM is a national expert body in environmental medicine, and researchers at IMM serve as scientific advisors to government agencies and participate in national and international expert committees. IMM educates students, doctoral students, and professionals in the field of environmental medicine and IMM is responsible for the master's programme in toxicology and the master's programme in work and health at Karolinska Institutet (KI).
Metabolomics is the large-scale study of small molecules or metabolites in cells or tissues aimed at understanding how these respond to internal or external stimuli. The derangement of the metabolome, i.e., the complete set of metabolites in a biological system may give rise to disease, and metabolomics is used to address the impact of environmental factors on human health and for the characterization of the mechanisms that underlie disease. Metabolomics is applied for molecular phenotyping and is key to understanding the exposome, the totality of an individual’s environmental exposures; it can also be used to identify biomarkers of disease, thereby guiding precision medicine.
The position as professor in metabolomics is focused on the development and application of metabolomics. Mass spectrometry is a method that is commonly used for the identification and quantification of metabolites in biological samples to study the impact of internal or external stimuli. You are expected to independently lead research projects in which metabolomics approaches are used to address questions of relevance to environmental medicine, and you will contribute to IMM:s mission as a national expert body in environmental medicine. You will be engaged in the teaching and supervision of students, doctoral candidates, and post doctoral researchers. You will also have managerial and scientific responsibilities for a research infrastructure for metabolomics and lipidomics at KI.
