To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

We seek a PhD student who will contribute to the unit of kidney epidemiology led by Prof Juan Jesus Carrero (https://medarbetare.ki.se/people/jucarr). The main goal of research activities in his team is to improve the understanding of the causes, consequences and management of acute and chronic kidney diseases.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We seek a dedicated and creative student to join our team, someone committed to furthering knowledge on the inter-relation between chronic kidney disease and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The project deepens into the inter-relation between these two diseases, and will quantify possible adverse drug events of common medications to treat IBD in patients with concurrent kidney disease. As such, the project will allow the student to master a wide range of epidemiological designs, including controlled family designs and pharmacoepidemiological designs. Analyses are to be carried out in complementary regional and national Swedish databases, such as the national inflammatory bowel disease cohort, The Epidemiology Strengthened by histoPathology Reports in Sweden (ESPRESSO) cohort and the Stockholm CREAtinine Measurements (SCREAM) project.

A) General eligibility requirement
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Verification of your documents

Skills and personal qualities

• The applicant should have a master’s degree in medicine or health-related discipline, and have a strong interest in kidney disease.
• The applicant should have skills and experience in quantitative data analysis.
• The applicant should have at least some knowledge or training in epidemiology.
• Programming skills in statistical programming software like STATA or R is considered a strong merit.
• Previous experience in epidemiological research is a strong merit.
• Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
• The applicant should be able to work well in a team, as well as having the ability to work independently.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
