Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

Toxic metals are commonly occurring in our food and drinking water. It is therefore important to clarify whether the exposures can result in any adverse health effects, especially within sensitive groups such as pregnant women and children. The research at the unit of Metals and Health focuses mainly on early-life exposure to toxic metals and other trace elements and how this can affect health. We have a state-of-the-art trace element laboratory and we are conducting epidemiological and experimental toxicological research within different mother-child cohorts.

Your mission

Together with other researchers and PhD students, the postdoctor will work on data from a Swedish mother-child cohort, investigating the relationship of fluoride and other trace elements with child health and development. The primary objectives are to clarify the role of pre- and postnatal exposures for birth outcomes, immune maturation, growth and child cognition and behavior. As a postdoctor you are expected to participate in data collection, analytical method development and evaluation, statistical analysis, and writing of scientific articles in English. The postdoctor is also expected to participate in supervision of students and in development of the research area, setting up new research questions. This is a 2-year position with the possibility of extension for one additional year.

Your profile

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with a doctoral degree in environmental medicine or other related fields. Good knowledge in epidemiology and statistical modelling is required, preferably also of longitudinal data, using STATA and/or R. High weight will be given to skills regarding communication of research findings, both orally and through publication in peer-reviewed journals in English. Preferably, the candidate should understand Swedish in writing and be able to communicate research findings in Swedish. The candidate should be meticulous and be able to work independently against defined deadlines. Experience in analytical chemistry, specifically trace element analysis, and/or toxicology is a merit. It is also an advantage to have previous experience of research concerning early-life human development.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
