Division of Molecular Toxicology

Cell death, and the ensuing clearance of dying cells by neighboring cells, are highly regulated physiological processes of importance for development and the maintenance of tissue homeostasis. Recent studies have disclosed a considerable degree of conservation of cell clearance pathways between nematodes and higher organisms. Our work is focused on characterization of the underlying signaling pathways that regulate the phagocytic clearance of dying cells. To this end, we deploy mammalian in vitro models along with the nematode model, in collaboration with other laboratories. We are also interested in the degradation and clearance of neutrophil extracellular traps or NETs, and our laboratory studies engineered nanomaterials including emerging classes of 2D materials with respect to immune sensing, inflammasome activation, and so on. Overall, we seek to understand how the innate immune system handles dying cells or xenobiotic (foreign) substances. The current project has received funding from the Swedish Research Council.

Duties

The successful candidate will work at the Division of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, in an international environment. The post doc will focus on characterization of the mechanisms of cell clearance using in vitro model systems and, in collaboration with other laboratories, the nematode model.

Entry requirements

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a PhD degree in cell- or molecular biology, immunology, toxicology, or equivalent field. Experience with the following techniques is needed: maintenance of primary cell cultures and cell lines, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and standard cell- and molecular biology techniques including RT-PCR, siRNA transfection, etc. Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with other members of the laboratory and with our collaborators, are essential. Previous post doc experience and a strong publication record are preferred. The successful candidate may also be tasked with the supervision of master students.

Application process

The application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. Curriculum vitae, including date of PhD defense, previous academic position(s), current position, and a list of laboratory skills, as well as a description of other, relevant academic distinctions, and teaching experience (max. 5 pages).
  2. List of publications, including original articles, review articles, and book chapters (do not any send any reprints).
  3. Statement of current and future research interests (max. 1 page).
  4. At least two signed letters of recommendation from current or former supervisors (send scanned copies of letters).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
