Karolinska Institutet,

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Division
Applications are invited from highly motivated individuals who are interested in molecular aspects of muscle dysfunction for postdoctoral studies in the unit of Molecular muscle physiology & pathophysiology. The common goal of the research in our laboratory is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms behind muscle dysfunction, muscle weakness and metabolic alterations, which are recurrent comorbidities in e.g. rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. In particular, oxidative stress, calcium handling and mitochondrial function are key aspects studied in relation to the intramuscular interplay that contributes to impaired muscle function.

Duties
The successful applicant will study mechanisms leading to skeletal muscle dysfunction. The work will include in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro analysis primarily in mice but also in humans.  A majority part of the work will be performed on intact whole muscle and adult isolated skeletal muscle fibers from mice. The type of analyses that will be performed include; isometric force measurements, live imaging of Ca2+ and free radicals using different pharmacological and genetic tools, metabolic profiling, mass spectrometry, transcriptional analyses and biochemical and molecular assays. Individuals with a background in molecular and/or cell biology and mouse handling/surgery with a keen interest in skeletal muscle free radical signaling and metabolism are encouraged to apply. Experience with live imaging and analyses of oxidative stress and mitochondrial function is a big advantage. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have good communication skills, be proficient in written and spoken English and have a high level of motivation, be organized, hardworking and have the ability to work both independently and within a team.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A personal letter (no more than one page)
  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
