Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Medicine/Center for Infectious Medicine(CIM)

The Department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises of seven units, three research centres, and a total of around 70 independent research groups. Our ambition is to be a leading department within Medical research and education.

Description of research group and project
At the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM) (http://www.ki.se/cim) research focuses on
studies of the human immune system
and infectious disease. The vision is to be a world leading translational research centre within immunology.

The postdoc project will be conducted in Prof. M. Flodström-Tullberg’s research group (http://ki.se/en/medh/malin-flodstrom-tullberg-group). The research performed in the laboratory of Prof. M. Flodström-Tullberg (MFT lab) focuses on the etiology and pathogenesis of the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes. The group has a special interest in common human viruses (enteroviruses) associated with development of type 1 diabetes in humans and conducts studies on mechanisms by which these viruses can cause beta cell destruction. The group is also involved in efforts to make novel enterovirus vaccines and is a member of several national research networks including nPOD-V and Therdiab. The MFT lab employs experimental in vitro and in vivo models and uses advanced molecular-, proteomic-, cellular- and immunological techniques to study interactions between the insulin producing beta cell, the host immune system and viruses of relevance for the etiology and pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes.

The research project focuses on identifying biomarkers for pancreatic beta-cell damage and stress in experimental in vitro and in vivo models.

Duties
We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled person to join our efforts in using various in vivo and in vitro disease models to study immune responses to enteroviruses and to identify biomarkers for virus-induced type 1 diabetes. The work includes but is not limited to studies of experimental disease models and the use of bioinformatics methods to analyze transcriptomic and proteomic data obtained via RNAseq and mass spectrometry. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the scientific design and establishment of experimental protocols, generate and analyze data, present and interpret results, write scientific reports and articles in English. The tasks may also include project administration and training of masters and/or Ph.D. students.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants should have extensive experience in working with in vitro and in vivo models, extracellular vesicles, miRNA extraction and analysis, and basic skills in proteomics. Applicants must possess excellent communication skills and be able to interact and work efficiently in a team.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

    1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
    1. A complete list of publications
    2. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
    3. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances.

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
