Karolinska Institutet

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Division
The Clinical Research Centre (CRC), where the employment is placed, is a common resource for researchers from different departments at Karolinska Institutet and/or clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. A part of the clinical research at Karolinska University Hospital is performed at CRC, presently comprising some 20 research groups with over 150 employees. The Centre provides the facilities needed for cell- and molecular biology research and the possibility to perform research in vivo.

Pre-Clinical Laboratory

Portal South at the Preclinical Laboratorium (PKL) provides support for importing and exporting alive mouse strains, embryos or sperms for researchers around the world.

The facility offers also cryopreservation and re-derivation services. Re-derivation, also called cleansing or embryo transfer, is provided for all researchers who need to import infected mouse strains and will have their research using these strains in our facilities. Furthermore the facility offers in vitro fertilization (IVF) for those who import embryos or sperms.

Cryopreservation, normally used in combination with IVF, is a technique that gives the opportunity for the researcher to save valuable strains in freeze banks in order to generate alive animals when needed.
