Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
The division of Clinical Geriatric conducts research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. The research is multifaceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Some focus areas include lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies, imaging methods, and registry studies. The activities are multidisciplinary and include medical research and research in the specialty engines psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and nursing. We have a close cooperation with the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge.

Research group
The research group of Prof. Kivipelto has the Stockholm Sjukhem’s professorial chair in Clinical Geriatrics at Karolinska Institutet, and she is leading the multidisciplinary research team known as ‘Nordic Brain Network’ (NBN). NBN is composed of about 40 people, it is based in the Division of Clinical Geriatrics at NVS-Department, and belongs to two internationally leading centers; Center for Alzheimer Research and Aging Research Center.
The NBN group focuses on clinical and translational research on prevention and treatment of cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Prof Kivipelto’s team has identified several modifiable and treatable risk factors for dementia/AD, including interactions between genetic and environmental factors.
Prof. Kivipelto is also Head of the Clinical Trials Unit at the Memory Clinic, Karolinska University Hospital where the team is carrying out prevention trials testing multidomain interventions to prevent AD and is involved in several phase I-III drug trials for AD. The NBN team is involved in several large international projects and networks.

Duties
The research assistant will work with the EIT-Health Multimodal strategies to promote a healthy brain in aging: Innovative evidence-based tools  (MULTI-MODE) project. It will also create educational programs for dementia prevention, using novel technologies and educational techniques.
Tasks of the research assistant include piloting the eHealth tools within the project’s pilot studies, data analysis, development of the material for education and dissemination (e.g. brochures, MOOCs courses, workshops, seminars, exchange events), development and management of the project website, and communication with stakeholders. The research assistant will work closely with the project coordinator, and will assist with project management and reporting to the funding body.

The applicant must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. public health, psychology, entrepreneurship). As the project centers around novel technologies, it is a strong merit to have experiences with the development and piloting of new technologies. Also, since a MOOC course has been developed and is currently ongoing within the MULTI-MODE proejct, we are seeking a candidate who has previous experiences with online teaching and course management.
The candidate must be fluent in English, and have advanced writing skills. The candidate is expected to be familiar with using Microsoft office (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint).
The applicant will be part of a dynamic international research team, and he/she should be driven, motivated, take initiative, and have good communication and problem solving skills. The applicant must also be able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
