Karolinska Institutet,

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Division
A postdoctoral position (scholarship) is available in the lab of Carl Sellgren, MD, Ph.D. at the department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet. Sellgren lab recently moved to Biomedicum, a new interdisciplinary research center designed to concentrate much of the experimental research conducted at Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna. Our research focuses on identifying molecular mechanisms causing neurodevelopmental disorders and uses hiPSC-based models derived from patients in our collaborating clinics at Karolinska Sjukhuset. We have a particular interest in the role of microglia in brain development under physiological as well as pathophysiological conditions and have for example recently developed high-throughput assays for precise quantification of synaptic pruning in vitro. The research is funded from e.g. Marianne and Markus Wallenbergs Stiftelse, the Swedish Research Council, and KI StratNeuro.

Duties
The candidate will work on 2D and 3D hiPSC-derived models including neural and microglia differentiation, gene editing, image- and flow-cytometry based quantification of phagocytosis, scRNA seq, and drug screening. Projects cover disease mechanisms as well as protocol and assay development.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Other requirements
Expertise and research experience in hiPSC-based cellular modeling. Previous work with genetic engineering, e.g., CRISPR genome editing, is highly desired. Research experience in immunology would also be advantageous but not required. The candidate must be fluent in English, have excellent writing skills, and be able to take the lead on projects. We are looking for a cooperative candidate who thrives to work with others. The candidate will join an enthusiastic, collaborative, hardworking and dynamic team including pre-clinicians as well as clinicians.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
