Karolinska Institutet,

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Division
The overall research mission of the unit for molecular pain research led by Prof. Camilla Svensson is to advance our understanding of the mechanisms that drive chronic pain states and identify targets for pain relief. In this context, we are exploring how the immune system in the periphery and glial cells in the spinal cord affect the sensory nervous system and contribute to the regulation of pain signal transmission. We are also engaged in studies aimed at utilizing state-of-the art technology for drug delivery. We use a number of behavioral, immunohistochemical, electrophysiological and molecular biological techniques to dissect pain pathways, and how they can be controlled, using in vivo and in vitro systems. The research group (10 PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and staff members) collaborate with preclinical as well as clinical researchers not only within Karolinska Institutet, but also with other Swedish and international researchers.

Duties
The successful applicant will study pain-like behavior and novel means of drug delivery in mouse models of arthritis and nerve injury. The project is based on a cross-disciplinary collaboration with the intention to build a foundation for utilizing new technology for drug delivery to patients with chronic pain. The work will be centered on behavioral studies, pharmacology and tissue analysis, utilizing disease-related animal models of persistent pain. The candidate will learn and use different in vivo behavioral assay and methods for histopathological examination. Both conventional and explorative drugs will be part of the studies. Some of the work will be performed in primary neuronal cell cultures. The duties will provide opportunities to teach and supervise master and PhD student. The project requires close interaction with engineers and pre-clinical and clinical pain researchers as well as the industry, which makes this an exciting multidisciplinary translational project.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

A person is eligible for a postdoc position if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than five years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

The applicant must be ambitious and demonstrate a strong interest in chronic pain and/or joint disorders and an appropriate background to develop the proposed research area. Experience with assessment of animal behavior and animal surgery is a plus.

Fluency in written and spoken English is required. The successful candidate must have good communication skills, be capable of working in a structured and efficient way and have a willingness to work collaboratively.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system. Short listed candidates are expected to be available for an interview either online or on site.
